Chapter 35: Her Mysterious Background
Olivia was taken aback by Nathan’s unexpected appearance. The smile on her face vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, unreadable expression. She had not expected to run into him here, of all places.
Lucas, visibly surprised but maintaining his composure, quickly stood to greet the newcomers. His eyes subtly flicked toward Olivia, gauging her reaction. “Dad. Mr. Carter… What brings both of you here?”
George Martinez seemed a bit surprised by the presence of guests in his son’s office. “Do you have guests here?”
Olivia stood up before Lucas could respond. “It’s all right. Lucas and I have finished our discussion. I won’t take more of your time.”
She turned toward Lucas with a polite smile. “Thanks for today. You go ahead and attend to your guest. Benjamin and I will be on our way.”
Lucas hesitated for a brief moment but then nodded, a reluctant smile crossing his face. “Shall I see you out?”
“No need. You should prioritize your new guest. We’ll take our leave.”
With that, Olivia addressed George, her tone polite but firm. “Mr. Martinez, if there’s nothing else, we’ll be on our way. Feel free to continue with your matters.”
She couldn’t help but glance at Nathan. He stood tall, his imposing figure filling the space. His gaze was cold, yet there was a depth to it that felt almost unnerving. As their eyes met, Olivia felt the weight of his stare, and for a moment, she felt like he was dissecting her very soul.
Why is Olivia here?
How does she know Lucas?
She’s smiling, and their conversation seems casual… They’re close.
She’s the general manager of Horizon Ventures, and her assistant is from a prominent financial family. She even knows the heir of the Martinez Group! What else does this woman know that I don’t?
Nathan’s gaze intensified, his thoughts racing. He could feel a sense of intrigue forming within him, a need to uncover more about her.
Olivia, feeling the tension, quickly looked away and turned to leave with Benjamin. Her pace quickened, the unease settling deep inside her.
Once they were gone, Lucas spoke up, his voice tinged with curiosity. “Dad, why did you bring Mr. Carter here?”
“Oh, yes, there’s some matter at hand. I plan to put you in charge of the negotiations for the upcoming collaboration with Carter Group. Originally, you were supposed to meet Mr. Carter, but he had to leave, so he came by to say hello on his way out.”
George turned to Nathan, who stood still, his presence still heavy in the room.
Unexpectedly, Nathan spoke, his voice calm but with a sense of urgency. “Mr. Martinez, I just remembered an urgent matter, so I’ll have to take my leave. I’ll arrange another time to discuss matters with your esteemed company.”
Without waiting for a response, Nathan turned and exited swiftly.
George, though surprised, didn’t dwell on it. Nathan’s ability to make such decisions without hesitation was something George had come to respect. The business world was a battleground, and Nathan’s sharpness and decisiveness made him a force to be reckoned with.
After leaving Lucas’ office, Olivia quickly exited the Martinez Group building with Benjamin.
“Ms. Monroe, I’ll fetch the car, so please wait here for a moment. I’ll send you home first,” Benjamin offered softly, stepping toward the parking area.
However, Olivia stopped him. “Don’t bother. I’ll take a taxi later. You go ahead and handle things. I don’t want to delay further. We must set up the office space quickly, contact the overseas teams, and ensure everything is in order.”
“But…” Benjamin hesitated, his concern for her clear.
Olivia interrupted him, her tone firm. “I’m an adult, capable of taking care of myself. Go on. Don’t make me repeat myself!”
Benjamin, though reluctant, had no choice but to do as she asked. With a nod, he turned and walked away.
Once he was out of sight, Olivia wandered in a different direction, needing some time alone. She had been suppressing her emotions since returning to her homeland, and the pressure was starting to take its toll. The coming weeks would be busy, and she needed to adjust her mindset if she was to succeed. She had always prided herself on excellence, refusing to allow any room for mistakes. But today had been a lot, and she needed a moment to clear her mind.
As she walked, a sleek Maybach suddenly came to a halt beside her. The smooth sound of the engine cutting off caused her to look up, startled. The tinted window slowly lowered, revealing the familiar, perfectly handsome face of the man behind the wheel.
“Get in,” Nathan’s low, commanding voice came through, his tone leaving no room for argument.
