Chapter 33: Are You Teaching Me How to Do Things?
Emma stood blocking Olivia’s path, her gaze fixed and unyielding. Just like Olivia, she had spent the entire night awake, her thoughts consumed by Nathan. She had bombarded him with calls and messages, trying to restart their discussions about marriage, but Nathan had ignored all her attempts. This morning, she had gone to the Carter Group in search of him, only to find he was caught up in meetings. Frustrated, she had waited for hours, and when she finally heard he had left for Martinez Group, she immediately followed.
Finding Olivia there only intensified Emma’s anger. She assumed Olivia was there to pursue Nathan too, and her frustration boiled over. She intercepted Olivia and confronted her with an outburst of harsh words.
“Move out of my way. Don’t obstruct my path!” Olivia’s voice was cold and commanding, and she glared at Emma, refusing to be intimidated.
Emma, prideful and unyielding, crossed her arms and stood firm. “Who do you think you are, telling me to leave? I’ll have you know, no matter how much you act important, you’re still nothing more than a worthless servant in my eyes. You’re a disgrace who can’t even hold your head high in the Carter family! Nathan is not someone you can even dream of being with!”
Her words were venomous, and she leaned in, sneering. “If you had any sense, you’d keep your distance from him. Don’t cling to him like this. Remember the consequences from five years ago?”
She was trying to provoke Olivia, mentioning the past with a mocking smile, her voice laced with disdain. “Make another mistake… and Emberfall won’t have a place for you.”
Olivia’s eyes narrowed dangerously at Emma’s words. “Are you trying to teach me how to behave?” she asked, her tone ice-cold.
Emma hesitated for a moment, but then squared her shoulders, determined to keep going. “Just stating the facts! Nathan took you in out of pity back then. And now you think you can stay by his side through underhanded means? Stop daydreaming!”
The absurdity of Emma’s words amused Olivia more than it angered her. “When did I ever say I wanted to stay by his side? Ms. Patel, if your mind is not working, I suggest you head to the hospital for a check-up. Stop barking like a rabid dog. And since when did I need your interference in my life? Who do you think you are?”
With a sharp and final dismissive gesture, Olivia turned her back on Emma and started walking towards the elevator.
Emma, furious, couldn’t handle being insulted like that. She grabbed Olivia’s arm, her grip tight as she tried to stop her from walking away. “Enough with the act, Olivia! You know I’m engaged to Nate, so don’t pretend like you’re not causing trouble. You’ve come all this way, and now you think you can claim you have no ulterior motives? Do you really think I’m stupid?”
Olivia looked at Emma’s hand gripping her arm with obvious disgust in her eyes. She was about to respond when Benjamin, who had been standing by Olivia’s side, acted swiftly.
He grabbed Emma’s wrist and yanked her away from Olivia, his voice stern as he said, “Where did this noisy woman come from? How dare you touch Ms. Monroe?”
Emma was thrown back several steps by the force, her face twisting in fury. “Olivia, you—!”
Olivia, unfazed, cut her off, her voice dripping with disdain. “If you really had the ability, you’d focus on holding onto Nathan instead of shouting at me. It only shows how worthless you are if you can’t even keep him. Don’t direct your frustration at me. I’m busy and don’t have time for your petty problems.”
With those words, she brushed her arm where Emma had touched it and turned away, heading for the elevator with her usual calm demeanor.
Emma stood there, seething with anger, her body trembling in rage.
“You’re nothing but a lowly servant, Olivia! What gives you the right to treat me like this?” she muttered under her breath, vowing she would get back at Olivia. I won’t let you get away with this. Never.
Oblivious to Emma’s seething resentment, Olivia rode the elevator up, her mind still processing the encounter. Emma’s words echoed in her thoughts, and she couldn’t help but wonder if Nathan had come to the Martinez Group for a reason. It sounds like Nathan is here as well. What could he be doing here? she mused. I hope we don’t run into each other.
With her thoughts swirling, Olivia continued on her way, unaware of the storm brewing behind her.
