Chapter 27: The Child Is an Accident
Emma’s reaction was exactly what Emily had expected. Seeing her distressed, Emily quickly reassured her. “Emma, don’t overthink it. Nathan did a DNA test with that child today, and the results showed that the boy isn’t his son. I’m on your side, no matter what. I won’t recognize that child as a Carter. To me, you’re the Carter family’s only daughter–in–law. Only your child will be the Carter family’s legitimate heir.”
“When you and Nathan get married, you’ll have your own child. Any child born to that wench, Olivia, is unworthy.” Emily’s tone was venomous, filled with disgust as she spoke about Olivia. But despite Emily’s reassurances, Emma didn’t feel comforted. She forced a smile, but it was evident that she was struggling.
Having been by Nathan’s side for so many years, Emma had long observed his behavior around certain people. Every time Olivia was involved, Nathan’s attitude would change. And now, this child—Olivia’s son—was undeniably his flesh and blood. With that connection, Nathan and Olivia could never truly be separated.
Emma’s jealousy was all-consuming. She had been with Nathan for five years, yet he had never shown her any real affection. Now that their engagement was being called off, Emma couldn’t fathom how she could ever have a child with Nathan. The thought made her nearly mad with frustration.
Nathan is mine! I will be the future Mrs. Carter! Olivia, you wench. Don’t even think about taking away everything that belongs to me! What happened five years ago was an accident. That child is also an accident. Accidents need to be rectified!
Meanwhile, Olivia’s emotions were still unsettled when she returned home with Liam. Although the DNA test results had been in her favor, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Liam’s birthday and sudden reappearance were still suspicious. With Nathan’s personality, he wouldn’t give up easily. If the first test failed, there might be a second…
Olivia’s head ached at the thought. She had to stay in the country to deal with the subsidiary office’s affairs. Otherwise, she would have already taken Liam and left long ago.
Upon entering the house, the boy immediately hugged her tightly and buried his face in her neck. He was still feeling distraught. Olivia sighed, gently patting his back, and asked, “Are you still sad?”
The child’s lashes were still wet with tears, and his eyes were watery as he mumbled, “Mommy, did I make a mistake? I shouldn’t have returned to look for Daddy. Did you already know that Grandma is that kind of person? She won’t recognize me, that’s why… I’m sorry, Mommy. I was being selfish and didn’t consider your feelings…”
Olivia hadn’t expected Liam to say such words. She was surprised by his self-reflection. She carried him to the sofa and observed his expression. He seemed genuinely regretful and lost. This sudden return to the country had been impulsive, but every child longed for paternal love. How could she blame him?
“Silly boy, it’s not your fault! It’s my fault that you haven’t had a daddy all these years… I also understand that you’ve always yearned for a father. It’s my fault. I understand why you came to the country this time. Besides, what’s done is done. Blaming you is pointless. I just hope you remember one thing—if you can’t get your way, don’t force it. You’re my treasure. I don’t want you to suffer or be wronged because of conflicts between adults, like what happened today, alright? I’m heartbroken to see you like this.”
Liam’s eyes reddened, and he sobbed softly. “I’m sorry, Mommy. I just… really wanted a daddy! I won’t be so demanding in the future. I… love you the most, Mommy. I only need you…”
Olivia’s heart ached as she heard his words. She embraced him tightly, trying to comfort him. “I understand, but you can’t always get what you want or have things your way.”
Liam cried bitterly, torn by his deep love for Nathan. However, he also felt guilty about Emily’s harsh treatment of Olivia. What should I do now?
The young boy was utterly tormented by the events of the day. His emotions were in turmoil as he cried himself to sleep. Olivia, deeply distressed, carried him to his room and gently laid him on the bed after he finally drifted off.
