Chapter 15 – Refusing to Acknowledge This Grandson
Emily didn’t hold back. She sneered, “DNA tests can be faked. In any case, I won’t believe it…”
Then, she turned to Nathan, her voice rising. “And you, Nathan! Why do you believe everything people say? Don’t you know who Olivia is? You’re already engaged to Emma—don’t let some malicious woman ruin that!”
Nathan’s patience thinned. His expression turned icy. “If you came here just to say these things, then leave. I can make my own judgments. I’ve already sent someone to verify the DNA test. The truth will come out sooner or later.”
Then, without another word, he picked up Liam and strode toward his study, shutting the door behind him.
Emily stood outside, fists clenched. Her mind raced.
I can’t let this child be part of our family—no matter what!
—
Inside the study, Liam was visibly upset. Though young, he could feel Emily’s hostility toward him and his mother.
She refused to acknowledge him.
And what if… what if the DNA test showed that Nathan wasn’t his father?
Then he wouldn’t have a daddy anymore…
The thought filled him with panic. Without hesitation, he hugged Nathan’s leg tightly and looked up, his eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
“I like you, Daddy. I want you to be my daddy. I don’t want anyone else…”
His voice was soft and pleading, his little face full of distress.
Nathan stiffened for a moment before his heart softened. He bent down, picked Liam up, and held him close. “I hope so too,” he murmured.
Liam’s lips trembled, then a wide smile spread across his face. He wrapped his arms around Nathan’s neck and nodded vigorously. “Mm! You must be my daddy!”
Nathan chuckled. He wasn’t particularly fond of children, but Liam… Liam was different.
—
Some time later, a knock sounded at the study door.
Ethan entered. “Mr. Carter, Mr. Quince from Sphaera Group has invited you to meet at four this afternoon to discuss your partnership. He’s flying to Moreana at seven tonight and won’t be back for at least a month.”
Nathan frowned. “Why the sudden urgency?”
Ethan’s expression darkened slightly. “Mr. Quince has been unwell for a long time. He’s traveling abroad for treatment. His schedule is tight.”
Nathan hesitated, glancing at Liam.
Sensing his father’s dilemma, Liam immediately said, “Daddy, if you’re busy, you should go! I’ll be fine.”
Hearing this, Nathan didn’t hesitate any longer. He ruffled the boy’s hair. “Be good and stay home. I’ll come back early to eat with you.”
“Okay!” Liam nodded obediently.
Nathan turned to Ethan. “Stay with him. I’ll meet with Mr. Quince.”
“Understood.”
As Nathan descended the stairs, he looked around for Emily but didn’t see her. Assuming she had left, he exhaled in relief and departed.
But Emily had never left.
She had merely been waiting.
And the moment she saw Nathan step out, she hurried upstairs.
—
Ethan led Liam to his new bedroom.
The room had been decorated just days ago—furnished with a new bed, desk, and wardrobe. The bookshelves were stocked with limited-edition action figures, robots, and storybooks. There was even a stack of unopened toy boxes on the floor, filled with LEGOs and puzzles.
It was a paradise for any child.
However, Liam wasn’t particularly interested in the toys.
His eyes, instead, locked onto the gaming console.
“Mr. Ethan, will you play with me?” he asked eagerly.
Ethan smiled. “Absolutely.”
He was about to turn on the projector when—
A cold voice interrupted them.
Emily stood at the doorway.
Expression dark. Eyes filled with disdain.
And she was here for Liam.
