- “Well, it came true,” I said, then asked, “I
- don’t understand. Why did I marry someone
- like Jesse?”
- I had loved him.
- But definitely not this Jesse.
- Something must have happened in my
- missing memories.
- I looked expectantly at Lily, hoping for
- answers.
- Lily had been my neighbor in high school and
- classmate in college. During my lost years,
- she was my best friend.
- Everyone suspected I was faking it, including
- Lily But she only looked at me suspiciously

- then picked up her tea.
- “The Jesse of the past would have blown on
- this tea until it was lukewarm and fed it to
- you,” she said, pouring it down the drain. “But
- the Jesse of today wouldn’t even bother
- looking at you.”
- Simultaneously, fragmented images surfaced
- in my mind.
- Jesse, bundled in a heavy coat, standing at
- the bottom of my building, looking up at me,
- smiling.
- His lips, pale from the cold, moved, but no
- sound came.
- He seemed to be saying,
- Sarah, let’s get married after graduation!
- Lily grabbed my shoulder and shook me
- gently. “Sarah, don’t look back. The Jesse of
- today isn’t worth it.”
- My heart was in turmoil, but I nodded firmly.
