Chapter 47
The next morning, Valerie woke up early and headed to the Antique Restoration Center. She had barely taken a few steps outside when a black sedan pulled up beside her.
A man in a suit stepped out, his face expressionless.
“Ms. Schwartz, please come with us.”
Valerie frowned. “Who are you?”
The man handed her a badge. “Houston Financial Crime Investigation Unit. There are some irregularities with Tearie Entertainment’s accounts. We need your cooperation.”
Her heart skipped a beat. Financial crime? That was impossible.
“I’m no longer involved in the company’s management,” she said. “You should speak with Roderick.”
The man didn’t waver. “Mr. Porter has already been detained for questioning.”
Valerie’s breath caught. Roderick detained?
She clenched her fists. “I need to make a call.”
“You can do that on the way,” the man said, opening the car door.
Valerie hesitated. She didn’t trust them, but if Roderick was in trouble, she had to find out what was going on.
She got in.
As the car sped toward the airport, Valerie dialed Roderick’s number. It went straight to voicemail.
A bad feeling settled in her stomach.
Who could be behind this?
And then, a name surfaced in her mind.
Terrence.
Had he done this to drag her back to Houston?
Her jaw clenched.
If this was his way of bringing her back…
Then he had severely underestimated her.
