Alex’s words scared Ellie so much that she let him hold her and take advantage without moving a muscle.
Once the danger was gone, they exited through the back door of the supermarket. To stay safe, Ellie got into Alex’s car.
“Why were those people chasing you? Do you know anything about them?” Alex asked, rolling down half the window.
He lit a cigarette, took a drag, and rested his hand on the window frame.
“They’re probably with the group that tried to kill Orion,” Ellie said, still breathing heavily from the scare.
Alex exhaled slowly, turned his head to look at Ellie. “Orion?”
Ellie nodded. “I had a past with Quinlee. Back when Quinlee stayed with Orion, it was to help an international drug ring steal secret medical data.”
She continued. “After Quinlee’s mission failed, they killed her to cover it up. She must’ve given them my info before she died to get revenge on me. Orion’s been hiding in the hospital, so they had to go after me.”
“Quinlee’s after you?” Alex’s eyes darkened, and he flicked the cigarette out the window, rolling it back up.
Ellie added, “Quinlee’s also Haley. She’s always wanted to get revenge on me. I heard that although the drug lords are behind bars, the one calling the shots has a brother called Leon, he’s hiding in Driolace and is pulling the strings.
Alex stared at Ellie, lost in thought.
‘Haley again! Could it be that during my time in jail, I really forgot something important?‘ He looked at Ellie, falling silent.
An hour later, Alex dropped Ellie off at her place and went to the family house. He told his parents about his suspicions.
“You’re over thirty, how would I know which woman you’re seeing?”
Nancy looked away, raising her voice.
“Well, if you don’t know, just admit it. You’re getting old, stop acting so grumpy,” Alex said, half–skeptical as he tugged on his
ear.
He walked into the kitchen, smelling something. “Nancy, who’s this soup for?”
Nancy, seeing Alex with a spoon, hurried over to stop him. “Don’t drink too much, I made this for Orion.”
“He’s a grown man, he shouldn’t be drinking this. This soup is for women!” Alex grinned, pouring the whole pot into a big thermos.
Nancy realized what he meant and quickly grabbed the thermos. “Alex, are you seeing someone?”
Alex, watching Nancy’s skeptical face, nodded smugly. “When you have time, bring her over. Let us meet her.”
Nancy, looking at Alex’s serious expression, rubbed her hands in excitement.
“Nancy, with your temper, you might scare her off. Let me finish up my work first,” Alex said, trying to avoid the conversation as he grabbed the thermos and left the kitchen.
He thought, ‘If she knows the woman I’m seeing is a young widow with two kids, she’d cause a commotion, even if she doesn’t slap him. I have a lot on my plate, so I need to figure out how to deal with it.
