Unconsciously, Lacey waited until after nine o’clock in the evening, but Mark will hadn’t returned.
Lacey thought, ‘Ellie said on the phone that Mark had left the hospital on time. It’s already so late. Why hasn’t be come home yet?
Lacey got a little anxious. Then she opened the living room door and waited outside
Late at night, Mark returned. From afar, he saw Lacey sitting on the doorstep in her pajamas with her arms around her knees.
His eyes changed. Then he bent down to pull her up. “Why are you still up? What are you doing here?
Lacey said, “Mark, you’re finally back.
Lacey smelled the faint smell of alcohol on Mark and was stunned for a second. Then the entered the living room to get Mark’s slippers.
“Mark, have you had dinner?” Lacey asked cautiously, standing by the shoe cabinet. “Did you drink a lot tonight I’ll make you some hangover tea.”
Seeing Mark nod, Lacey turned and went to the kitchen.
Mark changed into slippers. Seeing Lacey bustling about in the open kitchen, he put down his car keys and walked in.
“Don’t make things difficult for yourself. You don’t know how to do this.” Mark took the jar from Lacey’s hand and put it back in the fridge.
Lacey said, “I can learn. I learn things quickly.”
Lacey stood empty–handed in front of the kitchen island, not knowing what to do next.
Mark sighed, took her hand and led her out of the kitchen.
Then he stopped at the stairs.
Although he had been drinking, he was not drunk. He was very clear–headed. “If you don’t intend to continue living with me, you don’t need to do anything for me, let alone try something you’re not good at.”
“I’m sorry, Mark. I shouldn’t have lied to you,” Lacey tugged at Mark’s arm with her head down, acting like a child who had done something wrong.
Mark looked down at her and said, “Lacey, you know what? What I hate to hear most is your apology.
“If all you have left for me is feeling sorry, then I will consider ending this contractual relationship in advance to make you feel better.”
The atmosphere was inexplicably oppressive. Lacey was a little flustered and confused.
She looked up at Mark and asked cautiously, “Mark, if we divorce, can we still be like before?”

After a year, she and Mark would happily get divorced, have a great meal together, and then be apart. When they met again. they would still be as close as before.
But now, things seemed a little different from what she had expected.
She buried her head in the pillow, unable to fall asleep at all.
In the next room, Mark stood quietly in front of the bedroom’s French window. He had been standing there for a while.
He recalled what Lacey had said before, “I like Mark best.”
“When I make enough money, I will marry Mark. I will be responsible for supporting our family, and Mark will only be responsible for being good–looking,”
“Mark, you should let me try the good stuff first. Let me give you a kiss.”
“No, I want to kiss you on the lips.”
He recalled that night long ago, when he was almost seduced by that silly girl who was emboldened by alcohol. They rolled on the hotel’s large bed and kissed for hours.
A self–deprecating smile appeared on Mark’s face.
Her drunken words had been bothering him for years.
Even though he had tried his best, that silly girl had never fallen for him.
