- Tve been waiting for you. What took you so long?” Alex walked into Layton’s private room in the Earl Hotel’s club. Layton started complaining as soon as Alex stepped through the door.
- Alex sat down and downed a glass of wine. After putting down the glass, he glared at Layton. “Why don’t you just go into hiding until Nalani gets remarried?”

- Layton spread his hands and said, “I was too far away and didn’t see their faces. I didn’t know that those two were going after Diana. I didn’t want to waste it, so I put what they had left in your drink.”

- Alex sauntered over, bent down, and rested one hand on the back of Layton’s sofa. “You’re not helping me. You’re harming me! If I wasn’t so resilient, Aaron would have destroyed me by now.”

- Alex stood before Ellie’s door, his hand gripping the handle. He gently turned it, only to find it locked. Releasing his grip, he paced back and forth restlessly.
- He’d finally made some progress with Ellie and he wasn’t about to let this opportunity slip away. He had to find a way to keep Ellie by his side forever. Lighting a cigarette, he leaned against the railing, his gaze fixed on Ellie’s door.
- “What are you doing here?” said Nancy.
- Alex turned around to see a woman with disheveled hair and bare feet standing in front of him. Startled, he reacted dramatically. He lost his balance and tumbled down to the first–floor hall. A loud thud echoed through the living room, followed by Nancy’s scream.
