Chapter 100
Late at night at the Earl Hotel’s inner club, Haley found Alex, who was passed out on the sofa, completely drunk.
The room was filled with the heavy smell of alcohol and tobacco. Haley pinched her nose and came over.
“Alex,” Haley nudged him, and Alex slowly opened his eyes but didn’t move.
“I thought you were asleep,” Haley said as she pulled him up to sit. “Come on, I’ll take you home.”
“Why did you insult her parents?” Alex suddenly asked, stopping Haley in her tracks.
“I didn’t. Did Ellie say something about me to you?” Haley’s eyes shifted away, feeling nervous as she let go of Alex’s arm.
Alex rubbed his forehead wearily and then looked at Haley. “Haley, when we got engaged, I promised to protect you, but there’s a condition.”
“You have to be the kind-hearted and pure Haley I knew back then, the one who saved me regardless of the risk and promised never to let go of my hand, even if it meant getting hurt with me.”
Haley was totally confused. “Alex, what are you talking about?”
Alex let out a dismissive snort. “How could you forget something this important?”
Haley thought Alex was just babbling because he drank too much. She wrapped her arms around his arm playfully. “Okay, don’t be mad. It was my fault, alright?”
“Let’s not argue about someone else, okay? Ellie is like your sister, and she’ll be mine too. As your future wife, I can comment on her, but she can’t just slap me for that. It shows she has no regard for you, and honestly, she doesn’t deserve your concern.”
Alex pushed Haley aside and lit a cigarette, taking a puff. “How cold she is between us has nothing to do with you.”
“What do you mean, Alex?” Haley stared at him, standing up in disbelief. They were engaged, and although they were separate people, in the eyes of others, they were one. Alex’s family would be hers, so why couldn’t it be the same with Ellie?
Seeing Alex relax back on the couch, Haley stormed out, slamming the door. Fuming, she stepped onto the street outside the club, ready to make a call. Suddenly, her sharp eyes caught sight of Aaron getting out of a taxi.
He didn’t show any signs of heartbreak even though they hadn’t seen each other for a while. In his prosecutor’s uniform, he looked taller and more handsome than ever.
The shiny badge on his left chest marked his status, a dream he’d pursued for years. Now, as a respected prosecutor, he had finally achieved his dream.
Overwhelmed with emotions, Haley unthinkingly stopped him. “Aaron.”
Aaron took a step back, keeping some distance from her.
Haley, still fuming, snapped, “Aaron, can’t you manage Ellie? She knows I’m already engaged to Alex, yet she keeps trying to interfere with him. Could you ask her what she really wants?”
Aaron frowned slightly. “I believe her. She wouldn’t do something like that.”
Haley lost her temper and shouted at Aaron. “You and Ellie really are siblings, equally clueless and dirt poor. Even though you’re a prosecutor now, you can’t escape your background. You’re just as poor as ever, so what are you proud of?”
