Hardy left. He said he knew I couldn’t forgive him right away, but he was willing to wait.
After Hardy left the hospital room, Shirley, who had been waiting outside, came to my side.
I glanced at her: “Did you hear everything?”
“I did.”
“So what do you want to say to me now?”
“I want to ask if that client from this morning has an interest level greater than fifty percent, and when we can finalize the
contract.”
“You heartless person, shouldn’t you at least first ask when I’ll be discharged?”
“I already asked the doctor about that at the door. He said the day after tomorrow. I’ve already revised our subsequent work schedule accordingly, with the next roadshow tentatively set for the day after that.”
“You’re not even letting me rest a few more days?”

Back then, the director told us we were one big family, and all the children were brothers and sisters. But after Elva left the orphanage, she never thought about her brothers and sisters again. I, on the other hand, often went back to volunteer in my previous life. In this life, after entering the Brook Family, I made

Watching these children stammer as they discussed “Sister Christine” in front of her, Elva suddenly burst into tears. She cried for a long time, so long that the orphanage director had already left with the children, and I had come to her side without her noticing.
I calmly waited for her to finish crying.
After a while, Elva covered her face with her hands and said softly: “Do you hate me?”
Before I could answer, Elva quickly added: “I hate you too.”
“I just wanted a better life. What’s wrong with that?”

Elva looked at me: “Are you saying I’m not as kind as you, not as innocent as you, not as loving as you?”

“Elva, your biggest mistake, both in your previous life and this one, is that your approach has always been to eat other people’s cake.”
“But why should others let you eat their cake? And even if they

“The right approach is to make your own cake.”

Elva cried out: “Who are you to lecture me? Don’t you want a share of the Brook Family’s wealth yourself?”
I shook my head: “I don’t.”
The two million I took from the Brook Group had already been repaid with interest after my company with Shirley became profitable. As for the clothes and jewelry Rita gave me, I had sealed the valuable items in a safe deposit box and made an inventory. I hoped to completely cut ties with the Brook Family in the future.
The reason was simple. The Brook Group made its fortune in real estate. Over the past thirty years, in the process of acquiring land and building, there had been incidents and deaths, with countless shady dealings behind the scenes. Jason had his methods to keep these matters suppressed for now, but they couldn’t be suppressed forever. Taking this blood–stained, dirty money would eventually lead to trouble, and when the time came, everyone associated with the Brook Group would go to jail.
Elva couldn’t understand this and just stared at me blankly.
After a long while, she said softly: “In both lives, I’ve lost to you.”
