Chapter 97 – What a Great Lengths to Make Me Miscarry
They were nothing but a pair of scoundrels—one had cheated, and the other had eagerly played the role of the mistress. What kind of moral integrity could they possibly have?
David shook off Elizabeth’s desperate grasp, pulling his pant leg back with disdain. “What good is begging me now? You’re the one who bound Caroline.”
The moment Elizabeth heard that, she froze. Realization dawned, and she quickly turned to Caroline. “Caroline, I’m sorry. Please forgive me. How about… how about you tie me up instead? I’ll accept it. I’m willing. Or you can hit me, take out your frustration on me!”
As she spoke, Elizabeth reached for Caroline’s hand, trying to slap herself with it.
Caroline jerked her hand away with force. “Don’t touch me. Hit you? I’d rather not dirty my hands!”
In that moment, Caroline could clearly see it—David had already softened. He was signaling Elizabeth to beg Caroline for forgiveness.
I knew it, Caroline thought bitterly. I had already guessed this would be the outcome.
David’s heart had long been swayed, completely leaning toward Elizabeth. Caroline had known this truth deep down, though it had been hard to accept.
If she hadn’t demanded a promise from David to severely punish anyone who harmed her, this entire fiasco might have been swept under the rug with nothing more than a few tears from Elizabeth.
Her heart turned cold.
Caroline instinctively rubbed her arms, but it wasn’t the cold of her body. It was a deeper chill, one that no amount of warmth could ever bring back to life.
In the living room, the three of them stood in a tense stalemate.
Elizabeth was still crying, her face a mask of desperation.
“Go home,” David said after a long silence, his tone harsh. “You’ll stay in your room and think about what you’ve done.”
“Mr. Ellison…” Elizabeth whimpered, but David didn’t even glance back. He walked upstairs, his movements firm, with no room for negotiation.
Troublesome.
The moment he left, Elizabeth quickly wiped away her tears, suddenly springing to her feet, full of spite and determination.
“Caroline, you’re lucky this time. Not only did you escape, but you even found evidence to force my hand!” Elizabeth pointed accusingly at Caroline. “Just wait… I won’t let you off the hook!”
Caroline’s lip curled into a sneer as she witnessed Elizabeth’s true, venomous nature.
Elizabeth gritted her teeth. “What are you laughing at? A woman carrying a bastard child like you can’t even protect yourself. Let’s see how you’re going to protect that bastard!”
The atmosphere shifted, as Caroline’s words carried a biting edge.
“You really know I’m pregnant, huh? It was after the hospital incident that you figured it out, wasn’t it?”
“Yes!” Elizabeth’s reply was sharp but defensive, almost as though she were daring Caroline to dig deeper.
Caroline’s eyes locked onto her. “Ever since then, collagen peptides, breakfast tea, the kidnapping… You’ve been going to great lengths to make me miscarry. Why? What’s your problem with my child? Does it get in your way?”
Elizabeth’s eyes flickered, her gaze darting around as she struggled to come up with a response.
Because you’re carrying Mr. Ellison’s child, Caroline thought bitterly. That’s what it is, isn’t it?
But Elizabeth didn’t admit it. She simply said, “I don’t get you, Caroline. Why are you protecting a bastard child so fiercely? If I were you, I’d just get rid of it, and then I’d be free. You’re carrying a burden every day. Aren’t you tired of it?”
“My child, I’ll keep it if I want to,” Caroline shot back, her voice strong and unwavering. “I don’t need you telling me what to do!”
Elizabeth’s words had struck a nerve, but Caroline remained resolute.
These people had no idea what it was like for Caroline, raised as an orphan, longing for familial connection. She had spent so much of her life feeling like an outsider. Now, she was carrying twins—two tiny, living beings who were connected to her by blood. What a rare and beautiful occurrence! How could she bear to end their lives?
Elizabeth snorted derisively. “But don’t forget, once Mr. Ellison finds out you’re pregnant, you’ll be finished for good!”
Caroline’s heart clenched, but she didn’t flinch. She would fight for her child. No matter what.
