Chapter 94 – Copied Too Many Times to Destroy
Caroline couldn’t help but wish she could vanish from David’s side entirely.
Sleeping together? Ha. While he sprawled comfortably on his king-sized bed, Caroline was crammed onto the tiny sofa.
At least she wasn’t on the floor—that was the only shred of decency David still had left.
Elizabeth sighed dramatically, clearly enjoying herself. “The things I only dream of, Caroline gets so easily. And then she says things like that just to upset me…”
As she spoke, Elizabeth linked her arm through David’s with practiced ease. “Mr. Ellison, I have just one small request. Could we have dinner together tonight? Since we met, we’ve had so few beautiful moments together.”
David’s face remained as indifferent as ever, his brows furrowing slightly in confusion.
Elizabeth lowered her gaze, pretending to be hurt. “It seems I’m putting you in a difficult position. Forget it, Mr. Ellison. It was thoughtless of me. Perhaps that night… should never have happened.”
Caroline raised an eyebrow. What night? What was Elizabeth talking about?
David owed Elizabeth for whatever had happened that night, and it was clear that she wasn’t going to let him forget it.
Caroline felt completely out of the loop. What night? What is she referring to? Some secret between David and Elizabeth that I don’t know about? Did they fall in love overnight?
Elizabeth stood slowly, her face crumpling with a mix of faux sadness and barely contained tears. “I’ll leave now, Mr. Ellison. Maybe the only time I matter is when you want to see me.”
Caroline nearly rolled her eyes. What a melodrama. A mistress and a scumbag acting like star-crossed lovers. Aren’t they tired?
It was exhausting just watching their little performance.
As Elizabeth turned to leave, Caroline turned to David, her voice cutting through the tension. “You’re not going to stop her?”
David shot her a cold glance, as if questioning her sanity. Is she actually encouraging me to go after another woman? Unbelievable.
“Are you going to stop her or not?” Caroline pressed. “You’re such a typical clueless man. When a woman lingers like this, it usually means she’s waiting for you to ask her to stay.”
“Shut your mouth,” David snapped, his voice laced with irritation.
Caroline tilted her head innocently, blinking as she said, “I’m not joking. If you won’t stop her, I will.”
David narrowed his eyes at her, clearly perplexed by her audacity. “You?”
“Yes,” Caroline replied, her tone firm as she raised her voice. “Wait a second, Elizabeth. Come back—I have something for you.”
David leaned back on the couch, a lazy smirk creeping onto his face. Let’s see what nonsense she’s up to this time.
Elizabeth turned around, clearly puzzled. “Something for me?”
“Yes,” Caroline replied coolly. “Come here and get it.”
With that, Caroline reached into her bag, pulling out a small stack of papers and handing them over to Elizabeth.
Elizabeth hesitated before reluctantly taking them, her fingers trembling slightly as she unfolded them. The moment her eyes skimmed the papers, her face went pale.
“Aren’t you going to look more carefully?” Caroline asked, her voice laced with curiosity and challenge. “Did you even see what’s on them?”
Elizabeth’s reaction said it all—she had seen enough. Too much, in fact.
David’s voice was low, his commanding tone sending a chill through the air. “What’s that?”
Elizabeth flinched, her panic evident. “No… nothing, Mr. Ellison.”
There was no way she could allow David to see those papers.
Without missing a beat, Elizabeth started tearing the documents into pieces, shredding them as if her life depended on it. She crumpled the remnants into a tight ball in her hand.
Her frantic behavior did not escape David’s notice. He stiffened, his eyes narrowing as he realized something was terribly wrong.
Caroline, on the other hand, did not intervene. She remained calm, her voice steady and cold. “It’s fine. I’ve made plenty of copies. You can’t tear them all.”
She reached into her bag once again, pulling out a thick stack of papers and fanning them out in front of Elizabeth with a dramatic flourish.
“See this, Elizabeth?” Caroline said, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction. “There are no secrets that won’t come to light!”
