Chapter 74 – Kill David
Caroline enunciated each word slowly: “What if I kill you?”
David raised an eyebrow, his lips curving into a mocking smile. “Kill me? You don’t have the ability.”
Over the years, countless people had wanted his life, yet none had succeeded.
Even in the Ellison family’s brutal internal battles, not even his closest allies had ever managed to bring him down.
Caroline clenched her fists. “Fine. Remember what you said today, David. If I get the chance, I won’t hesitate to kill you.”
David smirked arrogantly. “I could give you a knife right now, and you still wouldn’t have the courage to drive it into my heart.”
With that, he withdrew his hand, turned, and strode out of the room.
As soon as the door closed, Caroline collapsed onto the bed, feeling utterly drained.
Kill David? Take his life?
She lived under his roof, shared a bed with him every night—if anyone had the best chance to do it, it was her.
Yet, he refused to divorce her, refused to let her go, and let Elizabeth torment her freely. He took pleasure in making her suffer.
What kind of life is this?
Suddenly, Caroline sat up, got out of bed, and rummaged through the bottom of her closet.
She found a small, sharp knife—just the right size to hold and easy to conceal.
She slipped it into her pillowcase.
It would always be within reach.
One day, at the right moment, this knife would be put to use.
Even if she couldn’t kill David, at least she could defend herself.
Or… if she was pushed to the edge, she could end things on her own terms.
The thought flashed through her mind, and she suddenly froze.
How could I even think like that?
She wasn’t alone anymore.
Two little lives were growing inside her, depending on her to bring them into the world safely.
I can’t give up now.
For the sake of her children, she had to endure. She had to stay strong.
No matter how much David tormented her, she wouldn’t let it break her.
Taking a deep breath, Caroline glanced out the window.
Since she couldn’t sleep, she decided to go to the office and work overtime.
Better to pour her energy into work than waste it thinking about David.
When she arrived at the Ellison Group, it was nearly time for the office to close.
Anna, a colleague, was surprised to see her. “Caroline, what are you doing here? You missed the morning meeting. Mr. Boris said you were given another task, so you wouldn’t be coming in for a few days…”
Caroline gave a small smile. “I finished early, so I came back ahead of schedule.”
Anna frowned, concern evident in her voice. “You’re working too hard. You look a bit pale.”
“I’m fine,” Caroline reassured her. “It’s just the heat. I’ll be fine after cooling down in the air conditioning.”
Anna fanned her lightly with her hand. “Are you hungry? Have you eaten? You have low blood sugar—don’t forget to eat when you get busy.”
Caroline blinked. She had only eaten breakfast and nothing else.
Anna sighed. “See? You’re not taking care of yourself. Sit tight, I’ll grab you some food.”
Grateful, Caroline smiled. “Thank you, Anna.”
Having a friend like her felt like a rare blessing.
Just as she turned on her computer, Boris suddenly appeared beside her.
“Back already?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
Caroline blinked in confusion. “What?”
Boris chuckled. “Didn’t you run away because you couldn’t handle David’s torment? Did he drag you back?”
