Chapter 73 – I Can Be a Widow!
David’s tone was emotionless. “Maintaining your purity is your duty. Are you truly upset over a simple examination?”
Caroline felt her chest tighten.
He had trampled on her dignity, dismissed her emotions, and reduced everything to a mere “simple examination,” making her seem unreasonable for resisting.
“Can’t I feel wronged?” Caroline asked, her voice laced with bitterness.
“If you’re clean, you shouldn’t fear any test.”
To him, it was his right as her husband.
Caroline sat up in bed, her gaze sharp. “Elizabeth put this idea in your head again, didn’t she? Why do you believe everything she says? Have you ever believed me, even once?”
She had lived cautiously, struggling every step of the way.
Yes, this time, Elizabeth wasn’t fabricating anything. Caroline had indeed lost her virginity long ago.
The Brooks family had sold her to Nash. One night of humiliation, followed by an unwanted pregnancy—twins, no less.
She barely had the strength to protect herself, yet she still had to fight to safeguard her children.
She had narrowly escaped Elizabeth’s traps time and again.

Resentment, fury, and defiance swelled within her. Caroline clenched her fists. If she had to go down, she would drag everyone with her.
But David sneered. “Why should I trust you? How could you ever compare to Elizabeth? What are you, anyway?”
Just a bride he married to ward off bad luck. Someone destined to be discarded.
Caroline’s patience snapped. She grabbed a pillow and hurled it at him with all her strength.
But it was pointless.
David effortlessly knocked it aside.
Caroline glared at him, her nails digging into her palms.
Why should I keep quiet about the mess of our wedding night?
She was the true victim.
She should expose everything, make the Brooks family pay, force David to deal with the fallout, and make Nash take responsibility for fathering her children.
Even if her reputation was ruined, so be it. If she couldn’t live in peace, neither would they!
Unlike the Brooks, Newton, and Ellison families, she had nothing to lose.
She was tired of bearing this burden alone.
“Stop throwing tantrums,” David said, his tone cold. “I won’t indulge you. And don’t think I saved you because I care. I simply won’t let you die by someone else’s hand.”
Caroline lifted her chin. “Then kill me now.”
“That would be too easy.” He smirked. “It’s much more satisfying to break you piece by piece.”
“David, I hate you!”
“You’d better keep hating me,” he murmured, gripping her chin. “Never fall for me.”
Fall for him? How could she ever love a monster like him?
Caroline let out a sharp laugh. “David, even if every man on earth disappeared, and I was left alone forever, I would never like you! I’ll just wait for you to die so I can be a widow!”
“You won’t live long enough to see that day.”
