Chapter 43: She’s the Mistress, and You’re the Cheater!
“Not even a hug?” Boris asked, raising an eyebrow. “You’re that stingy? I’m talking about a purely professional, totally innocent gesture of camaraderie.”
“Get out,” David responded sharply, his tone colder than usual.
Boris shrugged, a smirk still playing on his lips. “Alright, alright. Mrs. Ellison, once you’ve soothed Mr. Ellison’s mood, head to HR to finalize your paperwork. From now on, any work-related matters go through me. I’m your direct supervisor.”
“Just call me Caroline,” she replied. “Since you hold me in such high regard, Mr. Boris, I’ll give it my all.”
“Perfect,” Boris snapped his fingers, looking both relaxed and pleased.
As he reached the door, he suddenly turned back and asked, “How exactly do you plan to soothe Mr. Ellison? Like what you were doing in the car earlier?”
Caroline’s face instantly turned beet red.
So Boris had been the one knocking on the car window and saw everything!
She wished she could disappear into the ground, her head practically buried in her chest. Soothe him? Yeah, right… Just looking at David irritates me.
After Boris left, Caroline decided she’d better make her own escape.
Clearing her throat, she said formally, “Mr. Ellison, I’ve got things to do, so I’ll take my leave. This CEO’s office isn’t exactly a place for a lowly R&D employee like me. Don’t want to risk any rumors that could tarnish your reputation.”
Caroline had no intention of being caught up in any scandals with David. Her sole focus was on her work—proving her worth through results and achievements.
Ellison Group was a top-tier company, a great stepping stone for her career. With enough experience, she could work anywhere in the future.
David leaned casually against his desk, one leg slightly bent, and let out a cold, amused chuckle.
She wanted to avoid gossip? Fine, but that wasn’t her call to make.
“What if I decide otherwise?” David’s voice was smooth, like a blade hidden in velvet.
Caroline racked her brain, her eyes darting around, but nothing came to mind.
Before she could respond, a sweet, chirping voice suddenly rang out from the doorway. “Mr. Ellison!”
Elizabeth strutted in, heading straight for David. “I just knew you’d be in your office. I haven’t seen you in days. I missed you so much!”
Elizabeth’s ability to act coquettish made even Caroline, another woman, feel secondhand embarrassment. She clung to David’s arm, leaning against his shoulder. “I hope I’m not interrupting your work, but I just couldn’t wait to see you. Did you miss me, Mr. Ellison?”
Then, as if just noticing Caroline, she gasped in mock surprise. “Oh, Caroline, you’re here too!”
Caroline rolled her eyes.
Elizabeth had clearly run right past her. There was no way she hadn’t seen her unless she was blind.
But…
Perfect! An idea flashed through Caroline’s mind. She picked up where she’d left off. “Otherwise, people might think she’s the mistress, and you’re the cheating husband!”
The atmosphere froze. David and Elizabeth’s expressions turned downright ugly.
It wasn’t false, but it wasn’t exactly pleasant to hear either.
Caroline didn’t care. She turned on her heel and bolted.
With Elizabeth around, David would definitely be preoccupied. This was her chance to escape!
“Stop right there!” David’s voice thundered.
Caroline pretended not to hear, quickening her pace. David moved to follow, but Elizabeth grabbed his arm. “Mr. Ellison…”
