Chapter 42: I’d Defy David for You
“Alright, alright, I’ll keep my mouth shut,” Boris said with a grin. “Mrs. Ellison, the decision is yours now.”
Truthfully, he had revealed David’s intentions on purpose. David’s pride was unbearable. He clearly wanted Caroline to join, but instead of saying it outright, he kept playing coy. Boris couldn’t stand it any longer.
Maybe if Caroline knew David’s true thoughts, she’d agree without hesitation.
Caroline felt frustrated.
So this was David’s plan all along?
Why didn’t he just say so?
Why so roundabout? His mind is as inscrutable as a labyrinth, even more complex than a woman’s!
“I…” Caroline started, but her phone suddenly rang.
She glanced at the caller ID and froze.
It was Nash.
A chill ran down her spine as she felt David’s piercing gaze.
His lips curled into a cold command: “Answer it.”
Caroline didn’t move.
David pressed the answer button himself and put it on speaker.
“Caroline, where are you? Can you come to my office, or should I pick you up?” Nash’s voice came through. “About the job we discussed yesterday—have you given it any thought?”
There was a total silence.
Nash continued, “I’m sincerely inviting you. I don’t want our personal history to affect work. I’ve always believed you’ll become a highly respected and successful formulator. If we can’t be a couple, we can at least be colleagues, even friends.”
David’s gaze was like a predator’s, sharp enough to devour her whole.
He silently mouthed, Answer.
Boris stood by, thoroughly entertained. Didn’t say this would happen! Looks like the tables are turning.
Caroline thought for a moment and said, “I’m well aware of the blacklist–it’s clear, I won’t be working against David for you. I’m not willing to take that risk.”
Chapter 42: I’d Defy David for You
“It’s a long story,” Caroline replied. “Thank you for the offer, but I’ll pass.”
She declined.
There’s no way I’d agree with David standing right here.
“Caroline, do you still hate me?” Nash asked. “There’s something I’ve been wanting to tell you, but I’ve never had the chance. Let’s meet in person. Some things are better said face-to-face.”
He wanted to confess that he had been the one to buy her that night, protecting her dignity. Without Nash, she might’ve lost everything. Though their love had shattered, Nash had always quietly watched over her, helping in ways she never knew—even if it meant openly defying David.
“We don’t need to meet,” Caroline said firmly. “Mr. Newton, I think I’ve made myself clear.”
She reached to end the call, but Boris stopped her.
“Mr. Newton,” Boris said, his tone light but firm, “from now on, she’s an Ellison Group employee. Whether it’s her personal or professional life, she belongs to us. You’d best give up.”
With that, he hung up.
Boris clapped his hands, satisfied. “Perfect. It’s settled then. Mrs. Ellison, I’ve worked hard to recruit you. Looking forward to our collaboration.”
He opened his arms, ready to hug Caroline in celebration.
David was faster. He grabbed Boris by the back of his collar and pulled him away.
