Chapter 30: She’ll Beg Me Soon Enough
William hesitated, his face showing uncertainty. “Mr. David, this might be a bit…”
David glanced up at him, his expression unreadable. “Hmm?”
William took a deep breath. “Understood.”
With that, Caroline had effectively been blacklisted from every company in the city. No one would dare hire her now, not with David’s influence looming over the business world.
Caroline, oblivious to the extent of David’s power, simply grabbed Anna’s hand and marched out of the building. “Let’s go. We’ll try another company. If I have to work under David, I’ll lose twenty years off my life.”
Anna was stunned. “Wait, Caroline. Did Mr. David reject your application? Why? He interviewed you personally! And you’re so talented! Remember that skincare lotion you developed in college? It’s still the star product of that brand. They sold millions of units!”
Caroline scoffed, rolling her eyes. “Who knows what he’s thinking? Maybe he hit his head on a door or something. He acts all high and mighty, like what’s he so proud of? He thinks the whole world should worship him. The man’s delusional, he’s a narcissistic bully who thinks being insufferable is somehow cool. Honestly, just looking at him ruins my appetite!”
Anna tried to keep up as Caroline stormed forward, venting her frustration the entire way. She was so caught up in her rant that she didn’t notice the curious stares from others around them.
Boris, who had been standing nearby, couldn’t help but watch as Caroline marched past. Who’s this woman? he thought, intrigued. She has the audacity to openly insult David right inside his company. She’s not afraid to let everyone else hear her. I’ve never seen such a bold woman before. Is she out of her mind, or is she simply tired of living?
As Caroline continued her march, William happened to walk by. Boris stopped him with a curious look. “Hold on. That woman who just walked by, what’s her story?”
William looked uneasy. “Mr. Boris, it’s complicated. Maybe you should ask Mr. David yourself.”
Boris raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Is that so?”
He made a mental note to investigate further.
Meanwhile, in the interview room, Boris pushed the door open and pulled out a chair to sit beside David. He grinned. “Wow, look at you, Mr. CEO. Covering for me while I’m busy. I’m so honored. I got here as soon as possible—don’t want to exhaust you too much, now, do we?”
David shot him a cold look, not amused.
Boris smirked, flipping through the candidate files. “So, how’s the interview going? Anyone promising? Oh, wait, isn’t this the woman who was just cursing you out? Caroline, huh? Why does that name sound familiar?”
David didn’t even look up from his papers. “No need to strain yourself. She’s my wife.”
Boris paused, caught off guard for a moment. “Ah, I see now.”
Boris’ curiosity got the better of him. “What was she saying about you?”
David’s voice remained flat, but there was a certain bitterness in his words. “Oh, you know, nothing important. Let’s focus on the task at hand.”
Boris leaned back, clearly entertained. “I see. But come on, what’s the deal with you two? I’ve never heard you talk like that about someone who’s your wife. You know she openly wished for your death before? Her dream is to be a widow.”
David’s lips curled into a small, tight smile, but there was no joy in it. “You think she’s gotten the upper hand?”
Boris couldn’t hold back anymore and burst out laughing. “Oh man, talk about finding your match! Who knew you’d end up outwitted by your own wife? Marrying her was worth it, wasn’t it? Life must be pretty entertaining for you these days.”
David’s expression grew darker. “What’s there to sort out? Caroline will beg me for help soon enough.”
He leaned back in his chair, a cold confidence in his voice. “She’ll come crawling back. It won’t be long now.”
David was certain of one thing: no matter how much she resisted, Caroline would eventually need him. And when that time came, she would be the one begging for his help. He was willing to wait.
