Chapter 14: She’s Pregnant!
Paul hesitated, unsure whether to continue.
“This…”
Harper raised an eyebrow, sensing his reluctance.
“What’s the matter?” she asked, her voice sharp. “Is she not here either?”
“She’s here, but…” Paul hesitated again, clearly uncomfortable. “Ms. Caroline angered Mr. David and is being punished in the dark room.”
Harper’s eyes widened in shock.
“This won’t do!” she exclaimed. “A couple should talk things through properly. Even if they’re divorcing, it shouldn’t come to this. Quickly, quickly, go and let her out!”
Paul opened his mouth to protest, but Harper cut him off.
“If David asks, tell him it was my decision,” she instructed firmly. “I’ll take responsibility.”
Paul nodded, and without wasting any more time, he rushed off to release Caroline. Harper followed closely behind, her expression filled with concern.
The dark room was located in the basement of the Ellison residence. It was dim, cold, and damp, with an unpleasant, musty smell hanging in the air—a place no one should have to endure.
As Paul fumbled with the key to unlock the door, Harper turned to him.
“How long has she been in there?”
“Three or four days. And Mr. David forbade us from bringing her any food or water, so the madam is very weak,” Paul replied, his voice tinged with sympathy.
Hearing this, Harper hesitated. She wondered if meeting Caroline was the right thing to do, given the circumstances. David’s actions had been cruel and excessive. Caroline was likely filled with resentment, and with a strained mother-in-law relationship already, it might make things worse.
“Paul, take her to the hospital for a full check-up and let her rest properly for a few days,” Harper instructed. “She probably doesn’t want to see me right now. I’ll leave first.”
Inside the dark room, Caroline could vaguely hear voices outside, but her senses were fading in and out.
She clenched her teeth, biting her lip hard to stay conscious.
How long does David plan to keep me here? Does he want me to die?
Her thoughts swirled in a haze of pain and frustration. Just as she was about to succumb to the darkness, someone lifted her from the cold floor.
“Hurry, take her to the hospital. Madam Harper has given the order; don’t delay…”
Caroline’s vision faded to black, and she lost consciousness completely.
When she finally woke up again, she found herself lying in a hospital bed, an IV drip attached to her arm. She blinked, disoriented.
“Ma’am, you’re awake,” Paul’s voice came from the side, filled with relief. “Thanks to Madam Harper, otherwise your life would have been in danger.”
Caroline’s eyes narrowed, trying to process what he was saying.
“Who’s Madam Harper?” she asked, her voice hoarse.
“Mr. David’s mother,” Paul explained. “She saved you.”
Caroline’s expression softened slightly. While David had been cruel, it seemed that his mother, Harper, had shown kindness.
Caroline slowly propped herself up against the bed, taking small sips of warm water and nibbling on some food. Gradually, her strength began to return. As she stared absently at the IV bag, the door to the room opened, and the doctor entered.
“Ma’am, are you feeling any discomfort?” the doctor asked kindly.
“Much better,” Caroline replied, her voice a little stronger. “Once the IV finishes, can I go home?”
The doctor’s expression shifted slightly, his brows furrowing in concern.
“Are you sure you don’t feel anything unusual?” he asked.
Caroline frowned, confused.
“Should I… feel something?”
Without answering, the doctor handed her a report. She took it, her eyes scanning the paper, and then froze.
In bold, unmistakable letters, the report read: “Four weeks pregnant.”
Caroline’s heart skipped a beat.
“What? I was pregnant?” she muttered in disbelief, her voice barely above a whisper.
The doctor nodded, his tone reassuring.
“This was discovered when we ran your bloodwork. Fortunately, the fetus is healthy and doing well. Congratulations, ma’am, you’re going to be a mother.”
Caroline’s mind went completely blank. Pregnant? Four weeks? The timing clicked in her head—the wedding night—the night she had been with David in the hotel. But the child’s father wasn’t David at all.
Her heart pounded as the shocking realization hit her. No. This couldn’t be true.
The child’s father… wasn’t David.
The implications of this discovery hung heavily in the air, leaving Caroline stunned and conflicted.
