Chapter 73
After parking her car in the underground garage, Joycelyn sent Ellison a message to let him know the gathering was over and she was heading home.
It was a way to keep him updated and ensure she was safe.
To her surprise, he called her right after.
“Are you heading home already?” Ellison had just arrived at the private room.
“Yeah,” Joycelyn replied.
“By the way, I wanted to ask—when are you coming back? Or are you staying out tonight?”
As she buckled her seatbelt, she glanced up and saw a familiar white Rolls–Royce.
It was Ruby’s car, the one she had seen before at the Rolex store.
“Maybe later,” Ellison responded, and just as he did, William opened the door to the restaurant’s private room.
Carmelo had planned an early birthday celebration to invite a traditional medicine professor who had just returned from abroad.
Although young, he was highly skilled and could potentially help with Isolde’s treatment if things went well.
Joycelyn didn’t press for more details, feeling it wasn’t her place to intrude into Ellison’s personal life.
The noise on Ellison’s end grew louder, and she casually replied, “Alright, I’ll drive carefully.”
“Yeah, take care,” he said solemnly before preparing to hang up.
Just then, Cecilia rushed in, panicked. “Carmelo, Ellison, Ruby is missing!”
Joycelyn overheard that and frowned.
Seeing the words “Call Ended” on the screen, Joycelyn helplessly pressed her lips together.
She started her car and pulled out of the garage, heading home.
She assumed Ellison was concerned about Ruby, which was why he hung up so abruptly.
But in reality, it was just coincidental timing when Cecilia burst in with the news.
“She just left, how could she be missing?” Carmelo sounded more agitated than anyone.
Ellison furrowed his brow, pocketing his phone, and said, “William, go help look. I’ll wait for Leah.”
About twenty minutes later, Ruby was found in the service stairwell, unconscious with severe facial injuries.
By the time Joycelyn arrived home and parked, Lucy called her.
“Joycelyn, did you get home okay? Everything alright?” Lucy’s voice was filled with concern.
“I’m home, no problems,” Joycelyn replied as she locked her car and took the elevator upstairs.
“Oh, good. I just overheard Caroline and Tenley gloating in the bathroom, saying they’d make your face look like a mess. I was worried you were in trouble. You didn’t pick up when I called earlier, it freaked me out!”
“I was driving, couldn’t answer the phone,” Joycelyn explained.
“Ah, the police are here.” Lucy added, noticing a group of officers entering. She immediately stepped aside.
“The police? What happened?” Joycelyn asked, surprised that a dinner gathering would involve law enforcement.
“Holy crap, they’re here to arrest Caroline! It’s like catching a little chick.” Lucy sounded shocked, quickly updating Joycelyn on the situation.
Joycelyn was confused, feeling like she had come home too early and missed the big news.
She switched her phone to speaker and listened closely. Amidst the noise, a voice rang out with authority. “Caroline, you’re under suspicion of hiring someone to harm Miss Wilson, injecting her with substandard skin care injections that caused severe facial disfigurement. Your accomplice has been arrested. Come with us.”
Joycelyn was stunned by the words.
She thought about the white Rolls–Royce in the underground garage.
Joycelyn thought, ‘Could it be Ruby? How dare Caroline do something like this to Ruby?’
“Lucy, what’s going on?” Joycelyn asked, her curiosity piqued.
“I’m calling you on video,” Lucy quickly hung up and dialed again.
In the video, Caroline was in shock as she faced the police, her face pale. “What Miss Wilson? I don’t know her, you must have the wrong person.”
Her eyes darted nervously, clearly guilty.
“Your accomplice has already confessed, don’t try to deny it,” one of the officers said sternly.
Caroline, now visibly trembling, said, “I don’t know Miss Wilson. It’s them, they must have mistaken the person. I told them to target that bitch Joycelyn, not Miss Wilson.”
Joycelyn froze as she listened, her back suddenly cold, feeling a chill all over. This was getting stranger by the minute.
She thought back to Ruby’s outfit earlier today–her black-and-white Chanel-style business attire. Joycelyn glanced at her own outfit.
Although the cuts were different, it was also black-and-white, and similar in style. Hers was just a longer skirt.
“Oh my god, this bitch really tried to set you up. Looks like her people made a mistake,” Lucy gasped.
“She’s finished,” Joycelyn said coldly, a sinister smile forming on her lips.
Caroline had sealed her own fate. Trying to destroy Ruby, now she was going down.
Lucy, still recording, continued to follow the scene, and at that moment, Joycelyn caught a glimpse of a familiar figure.
The elegant and distinguished aura could only belong to Ellison.
Joycelyn’s gaze froze, watching him intently. He was surrounded by men…
Earlier, she thought he had gone to the dinner because of Ruby, but now Ruby was in trouble.
She wasn’t sure if Ellison would come back.
After chatting with Lucy for a while, Joycelyn ended the call, feeling oddly empty.
It wasn’t because Ellison hadn’t returned home yet. It was more a feeling of being watched, a sense of vulnerability and fear.
And then, suddenly, she missed him.
She was shocked by the thought. ‘Since when have I become so dependent on him?’
