- Chapter 214

- “I just finished and came right over. Is Isolde feeling better?” Ellison stepped forward, his dark eyes scanning Isolde thoroughly to ensure she was alright.
- 72%
- Satisfied that Isolde was fine, Ellison walked over to Joycelyn, his gaze softening as he looked down at her calm, elegant face. He reached out, gently pinching her cheek. “Are you feeling shy with all these people around?” His voice was low, filled with warmth and affection.
- Joycelyn pressed her lips together, offering a shy smile before gently shaking her head.
- Isolde, standing nearby, couldn’t resist rolling her eyes. “You’ve become a bit too clingy since you got married, haven’t you? Wasn’t I supposed to be the one looking after Joycelyn?”
- “You passed out from all the excitement. I had to bring a doctor with me,” Ellison said, his smile playful.
- At that moment, Kingston walked in, his demeanor calm and steady as he carried a medical bag.
- Isolde glanced at Ellison with a playful look before returning to the sofa. “Kingston, take a look at my neck. After the last acupuncture session, it’s been hurting again, and I get dizzy whenever it flares up.”
- “I’ll take a look,” Kingston said, walking over to her.
- Joycelyn glanced at Isolde, paused momentarily, and walked over to Ellison. Without a word, she wrapped her arms around him.
- She didn’t say a word, but Ellison could feel the frustration in her.
- “It’s okay, I’m here now,” Ellison said, not pressing further, understanding that being the center of attention could be incredibly uncomfortable for someone who had never been in the spotlight.
- “Isolde is incredible. I don’t think I’ll ever be as strong as she is.” Joycelyn admitted, her voice soft.
- Joycelyn thought, ‘Seeing so many people makes my head spin, and I feel so out of place. No matter how much I try to prepare myself, seeing Iris act so meek only leaves me feeling helpless.‘
- “Yes, Isolde is impressive. The first time she took me out to an event, I was only ten, and I wasn’t any better than you,” Ellison said, gently patting Joycelyn’s back, his voice soft as he tried to soothe her uneasy emotions.
- “Like father, like son. With grandparents and parents as remarkable as yours, it’s no surprise you’ve been exceptional from
- the start.”
- Joycelyn thought, ‘Born into a privileged family, attending events like this is second nature to them. But it feels like I’m stumbling through it, completely out of my element.’
- “It’s alright. If you’re not comfortable, we won’t come next time,” Ellison said gently, trying to reassure her.
- Even Kingston, typically uninterested in gossip, couldn’t help but look up, offering a faint smile at the tender moment.
- “Did I hear right? Is Mr. Grant here?” Mrs. Willows’s voice called from the hallway, accompanied by footsteps.
- Seeing this, Sandra stepped outside after Kingston entered and blocked the door. “Ellison and Kingston are inside w Isolde,” she said. “Please keep it quiet–Ellison doesn’t like disturbances.”
- Hearing this, those trying to catch Ellison’s attention fell silent. They waited outside, even setting down their champagne glasses. Despite being older than Ellison, everyone lowered their stance, creating a scene of respectful anticipation.
- Ellison was a highly respected figure in the political and business worlds, known for his influence. He typically kept a low
- profile, rarely making public appearances,
- People always edited his photos online, even if someone captured his appearance and posted it, they quickly altered it. He was said to be the only man capable of setting the aesthetic standards for all of high society. Anyone who connected with him secured their family’s success for fifty years.
- Unfortunately, he had married young, and his wife’s identity at tonight’s event was shrouded in mystery, leaving everyone guessing.
- Sandra stood by the door, arms crossed, acting like a little bodyguard,
- Not far away, Ruby and Leah had only taken a few steps when they turned at the sound of movement, watching intently. They had witnessed Ellison entering the VIP lounge. Even just the sight of his tall, straight–backed figure was enough to captivate any woman.
- Still stung by Leah’s earlier remark, Ruby didn’t react when she saw Ellison enter. In that instant, a realization started to settle in her mind.
- “Dr. Mason,” Ruby said with a sarcastic smile, “Looks like you’re not in a much better position, are you?”
- Leah stayed composed, unaffected by Ruby’s words. “If Joycelyn were truly someone of importance, why hasn’t she been revealed?” Leah replied calmly. “We’re all smart enough, Ms. Wilson. We can all piece it together. Isolde’s health is deteriorating, and Ellison needs someone submissive to keep her at ease.”
- Compared to Ruby’s insecurities and jealousy, Leah seemed much more composed.
- “What are you trying to say? Joycelyn is just a pawn? Then why choose someone who’s already married?” Ruby asked, furrowing her brow as she eyed Leah suspiciously, testing her words.
- “Did she save Isolde’s life?” Ruby’s mind raced, unable to come up with any other explanation. She thought, ‘Octavia mentioned that Joycelyn had a whirlwind marriage. She’s been with the Grant Group for two years–if she were married to Ellison, they’d have been married by now.‘
- Seeing Leah’s lack of response and the resigned look on her face, Ruby reached her conclusion. She thought, ‘It seems that’s the case after all. Joycelyn must have saved Isolde’s life, and that’s why Ellison has to keep her around to calm Isolde down.’
- When the door to the lounge opened again, Ellison and Joycelyn stepped out, supporting Isolde between them.
- The moment they saw Ellison’s face, everyone’s eyes widened in awe. Ruby thought, ‘They always said the heir to the Grant Group was incredibly handsome, but now, seeing him in person, those compliments seem too modest. He isn’t just handsome–it’s beyond words. He is what they were describing
- With his sharp nose and chiseled features, he radiated an almost royal presence, the power that could command the room without a word. Ruby thought, ‘Just looking at him fills me with a sense of awe and submission.’
- “Isolde, Mr. Grant is here in person, but who is this elegant young lady with you?”
- “This is Joycelyn Maynard, our benefactor and also a member of the Grant family,” Isolde said, her arm linked with Ellison’s on one side and Joycelyn’s on the other. It was as if she had just received the most precious treasure, and her voice was full of pride.
- Though her words were subtle, the implication of “family” was clear for anyone who cared to listen.
- However, she wasn’t attending the event arm in arm with Ellison but with Isolde. It didn’t quite look like a married couple. Her birth mother had been a cleaner, and she didn’t fit the typical image of a high–society wife. Clearly, she must have done something for the Grant family to earn the privilege of being personally brought to the event by Isolde.
- “I see, Ms. Maynard, you must be a kind and fortunate soul,” someone from the crowd immediately praised her as soon as Isolde finished speaking.
- Joycelyn thought, I never expected Isolde to put me on such a pedestal. For me, in the Grant family, experially fulde, wher are truly my benefactors. Once the first compliment came, the second one was sure to follow
- Joycelyn was starting to feel a little light–headed from all the praise. She thought, In all my life, these are the most Battering compliments I’ve ever heard. Compared to the way these people praised me like Ima goddess, the compliments I’ve given Ellison were far too subtle
- After finishing her conversation with Isolde, Joycelyn finally had a moment to relax. Sandra approached with a small mousse cake and said, “Here you go, Joycelyn” Sandra’s voice was soft, but there was a hint of pride,
- “Thank you.”
- Just as Joycelyn was about to bite, she saw Ellison approaching.
- He was undeniably the focal point of the entire evening, his presence so powerful and enigmatic that it felt like an invisible force field, drawing all attention and leaving everything else in its shadow.
- Words were unnecessary; with just a glance or a gesture, he could create an invisible barrier that kept everyone around him at bay, making them hesitate to approach.
- Joycelyn thought, I figured he would leave first, but to my surprise, he’s walking straight toward me
- As soon as he walked over, all eyes in the room followed him.
- “Ms. Maynard, may I have the honor of this dance?” Ellison asked, stepping forward and bowing courteously.
- Joycelyn paused, the spoon with cake resting between her lips, and her clear eyes blinked in surprise.
- Though she had arrived claiming to be the Grant family’s benefactor, the moment Ellison approached, many of the high- society women in the room shot her unfriendly looks.
- Outwardly, he was married, but many of the young women in the room were watching him closely, their intentions clear. “What are you doing? I don’t dance. Why don’t you go home?” Joycelyn muttered, her voice low and sharp.
- “We’ll go together after the dance,” Ellison said, utterly unfazed by the curious and gossiping looks around them.
- His dark, intense gaze remained fixed on Joycelyn.
- “Mrs. Grant, may I have the honor?” Ellison asked, leaning in with a confident smile and addressing her directly as “Mrs. Grant.”
