After Rebirth, I Warm My Hubby Wronged by Me Chapter 7
  • Chapter 7 Devlin Refused
  • “Mom, where is Devlin?” As soon as Amberley, carrying desserts, stepped into the house, she began searching for Devlin, who had left the breakfast table that morning without uttering a single word. She instinctively felt that he was angry, unlike his usual quiet demeanor. “Amberley, you’re back. Are you tired? Would you like some water?” In a hurry, Yvette went to the kitchen and poured a glass of water. She brought it over to Amberley, her face filled with concern as she asked. “Mom, I’m not thirsty. You don’t need to keep fussing. Please take a break! Where did Devlin go?” Seeing Yvette busying herself with pouring water and cutting fruits for her, Amberley was filled with a profound sense of guilt. Only then did she realize that her stepmother lived in her house like a housekeeper, far from enjoying the privileges a wife should have. “Where could Devlin possibly go? He spends all his time cooped up in his room. If you have some free time, try to take him out more often.” Upon hearing Amberley’s concern for her, Yvette felt immensely comforted. With a smile, Amberley assured, “Mom, don’t worry. I’ll take good care of him. You rest for a bit. I’ll go upstairs and find him.” Devlin was conveniently on the second-floor hallway when he overheard Amberley saying, “I’ll take good care of him.” His heart bloomed with joy at her words. Even though he knew that Amberley’s words were but a mere smokescreen, he couldn’t help but feel elated. Her words alone were enough for him. Upon seeing Amberley ascend the stairs, Devlin hastily wheeled his wheelchair back into his room. “Devlin, I’m coming in…” Amberley announced. In no time, Devlin heard the knock of Amberley at the door. He silently thought to himself that she was merely trying to appease his mother with empty words. Was it really necessary for her to deliberately visit his room? She truly had a high tolerance. In order to deceive her family, she could bear to share meals with him and even endure the discomfort of seeing him. Devlin didn’t respond to Amberley. Instead, he sat in front of the computer, pretending to study. “Devlin, what are you doing?” Amberley walked in, carrying desserts with her. Devlin didn’t respond to her. He didn’t want to talk. In his heart, an uncontrollable jealousy surged. It was hard to believe that Amberley was willing to lower her pride and visit him for the sake of someone else. Amberley didn’t receive a response from the reticent Devlin, so she had no choice but to walk over, placing the dessert on his table. “This is the dessert I specifically bought for you on the road. Why don’t you give it a taste and see if it’s good?” With a face full of smiles, Amberley unwrapped the package, picked up the little cake, and held it to Devlin’s lips. Devlin watched Amberley, her face blooming into a radiant smile, with a cold gaze. A pang of pain began to spread through his heart… She feigned delight toward someone she despised. Devlin found no joy in this preferential treatment, only a bitter sadness. Was that man truly so extraordinary, deserving of Amberley’s enduring patience? He was consumed by a jealousy that bordered on madness, directed toward the person Amberley fancied – Sherman. His hand, rested on his thigh, clenched into a tight fist, but he soon relaxed it. He had a sudden epiphany, realizing he was crippled. He didn’t even have the right to be jealous of that man; he was unworthy. With a cold expression, Devlin pushed away the cake in front of him. In a frosty tone, he said, “I’m not hungry. I don’t feel like eating.” Amberley could only reluctantly put away the cake, knowing that a mere cake wouldn’t fill his stomach. It was clear that this person was upset with her. However, it seemed like she hadn’t done anything to provoke him, had she? “You’re angry with me!” Amberley stated, not as a question, but as a certainty. “No.” Devlin remained stoic, his gaze never straying from the computer screen in front of him. He was afraid that if he saw the pleasing look on Amberley’s face directed toward him, the seed of jealousy in his heart would be watered and begin to sprout. When the time came, he would be swayed by it, unable to let Amberley go. He wasn’t really mad at her; he was just upset with himself. “You’re lying. You’re clearly upset with me. What exactly did I do wrong? How am I supposed to know if you don’t tell me?” Amberley felt as if she and Devlin had switched places. Right now, she resembled a boyfriend who didn’t know what mistake he had committed, helplessly trying to comfort his girlfriend who was sulking in solitude. “I’m not angry. If there’s nothing else, please leave. I need to continue studying.” Devlin directly ushered Amberley out. He didn’t want to see her demean herself to please him. He couldn’t bear it. It felt as if thousands of silver needles were relentlessly pricking his heart. The pain was unbearable. “Marks your words. I’ll just leave, then. Who cares? Hmph!” Devlin’s actions had left Amberley fuming. Angrily, she picked up the dessert and stormed off. She had kindly brought him desserts, but he showed no appreciation and even chased her away. After witnessing Amberley’s departure, Devlin felt his heart ached even more. Seeing that Amberley had reverted to her usual disdainful attitude toward him, Devlin reacted with a sarcastic laugh. That was how Amberley was supposed to act, just as always, finding him annoying. As he had suspected, she hadn’t come to see him of her own free will. After Amberley left, Devlin began to resent his own cleverness. If only he had been a bit more naive, wouldn’t he have allowed Amberley to fool him, and he could innocently accept her kindness toward him? He wheeled himself toward the door reluctantly. Even if it was just a glimpse of her retreating figure, filled with frustration and disappointment, he didn’t want to miss it. “Gotcha, didn’t I? You’re a man whose words don’t match his heart. With no one to disturb you, why aren’t you studying?” With a huff, Amberley pushed open the door to Devlin’s room. She hadn’t left at all. Initially, she was pretty upset, but then she thought about how Devlin, this fool, had loved her so silently and patiently in their past lives. She deliberately lingered outside the door, and sure enough, she soon heard the sound of a wheelchair gradually approaching. The silly guy is foolish as always. Devlin remained impassive, showing no signs of embarrassment from being caught off guard. He coldly stated, “Why are you still here? I’m going downstairs to get a drink of water.” Only the faint blush on his ears betrayed his feigned composure at that moment. “Need a drink? Hold on, then. I’ll go and fetch you some water.” As she spoke, Amberley quickly stuffed the dessert into Devlin’s arms before turning around and swiftly walking away. Devlin was taken aback as he stared at the desserts stuffed into his arms, still trying to comprehend why Amberley hadn’t left yet. Before Devlin could figure it out, Amberley had already gone upstairs with a glass of water in her hand. “Here, your water. Now that there’s nothing else, you should get back to your studies!” Devlin was baffled. Despite the myriad of questions swirling in his mind, he accepted the glass of water and nonchalantly took a sip. Then, he found himself being ushered by Amberley to the computer. “Focus on your studies. I won’t disturb you. I’ll just tidy up a bit.” As she spoke, Amberley began rummaging through Devlin’s wardrobe. They were married, after all. It was only natural for them to live together. The idea of sleeping in separate rooms was beyond comprehension. Devlin watched in puzzlement as Amberley started removing his clothes from the room. He silently speculated that Amberley must be upset with him, probably wanting him out of this room. “Why are you looking at me? Get back to your studies!” Seeing Devlin constantly staring at her, Amberley reminded him, somewhat exasperated. Isn’t he supposed to be studying diligently? Why has he stopped now?
