- Chapter 4 Dining With The Family
- Devlin sat silently at the edge, his head bowed low. Only he knew that their marriage was a sham, and in a couple of days, they would be getting their divorce papers. The reason Amberley is acting this way is merely to let Dad and Mom lower their guards. She’s about to secretly leave for abroad. Amberley glanced at the silent Devlin sitting off to the side, then walked straight over and took a seat next to him. Upon seeing Amberley approaching, Devlin quickly maneuvered his wheelchair to make way, preparing to retreat back to his room. He knew that Amberley didn’t enjoy sharing the same space with him. He couldn’t stay and disrupt the pleasant atmosphere she had just created. Amberley glanced at the untouched food in the utensils next to her. Devlin hadn’t even finished eating. Where was he planning to go? She immediately understood that it was all her own doing. Devlin didn’t dare to stay here. Amberley stood up and grabbed the back of the wheelchair, pulling the person back. “You haven’t even eaten yet. Where do you think you’re going?” “Exactly, Devlin. Just sit there and eat! Now that you two are married, you should get along well. We are eagerly waiting to hold our grandchild!” Florian, upon seeing his daughter not rejecting Devlin, was filled with joy. If it hadn’t been so early in the morning, which made drinking inappropriate, he really would have liked to have a few drinks in celebration. It seemed that Amberley’s marriage had truly settled her down. After getting her marriage certificate, she became significantly more sensible. Devlin remained silent, quietly consuming his breakfast. Regrettably, the experience was akin to chewing wax, as if he had swallowed a bitter herb, filling his mouth and heart with an overwhelming bitterness. Yet, he couldn’t voice it out. Amberley had reached a point where she could tolerate being with him, treating their encounters as nothing more than a play. It’s evident that she harbors deep feelings for Sherman. Her previously fiery and aggressive demeanor has now completely softened for him. The more Devlin thought about it, the more miserable he felt inside. Not even the slightest hint of joy could be found in him from sitting next to Amberley. Amberley’s self-sacrificing nature made him prefer to leave, rather than have her by his side. Devlin made quick work of his meal, finishing everything on his plate in no time. “I’ve finished eating. I’m going back to my room now.” After leaving such an icy comment, Devlin turned his wheelchair and left. Amberley wore a puzzled expression, sensing that Devlin seemed to be in a bad mood. Yvette quickly tried to smooth things over with a smile. “Amberley, don’t take it to heart. Devlin is just naturally reserved. It must be tough being married to him.” “What’s tough about that? It’s better for a man to be a bit reserved, focusing on real work. Those smooth talkers are clearly up to no good.” The more Florian observed, the more he found himself more pleased. Familiarity breeds affection, indeed. He was extremely pleased with his choice of Devlin, who was intelligent with a knack for business. He believed that Devlin could assist his daughter in managing Tausend Group in the future. In his eyes, his daughter had hit the jackpot. “Hey, ease up on the chatter. Hurry up and eat. You need to head to the office once you’re done.” Yvette snapped at Florian, clearly annoyed. She was trying to smooth things over for her son in front of Amberley, but this man kept butting in. She was worried that he might cause Amberley to misunderstand again. Originally, Amberley detested that Florian was fond of Devlin, feeling as if her children had stolen away her father. “All right. All right. I’ve said too much,” he admitted. Florian was silenced by his own wife, so he could only keep quiet and eat his meal. He didn’t dare to say much more. Simply put, he was afraid that Amberley would resent him again. It was indeed tough being a father. From the moment her sister, Amberley, appeared at the dinner table, Mildred Tausend’s gaze never left her. She didn’t dare to openly gaze at her sister. Instead, she would sneak a glance and then quickly look away, pretending to be engrossed in her meal, only to steal another peek before returning to her food. There was no way that Amberley hadn’t noticed being watched all this time. Seeing her little sister’s gestures, she felt a pang of heartache. In truth, her sister had always yearned to be closer to her. Unfortunately, she was like a little hedgehog covered in spines. Whenever her sister got close to her, she couldn’t help but bristle, inadvertently hurting her. At first, she didn’t pay much attention when her uncle’s wife kept nagging in her ear that having a stepmother meant having a stepfather too. Back then, she didn’t have such a strong distaste for Yvette and Devlin, mainly because she was her father’s only child. But then, to her utter disbelief, Yvette became pregnant when Amberley was fourteen. When her father consented to the birth of the baby, she lost control completely. The words of her aunt seemed to have turned into a prophecy, as the fourteen-year-old girl immediately transformed into a rebellious teenager. She took her aunt’s words to heart and caused a ruckus with her father, creating quite a stir. She thought that by doing so, she could persuade her father to give up on bringing Mildred into this world. However, things didn’t go as planned. Despite her objections, Mildred was still welcomed into this world. As always, she didn’t like her and absolutely despised her. However, it seemed as though Mildred was oblivious to this. In the past, she would draw close and affectionately call out to her. But after she had lost her temper and chased Mildred away, Mildred could only dare to watch her from a distance, clandestinely. So, when Mildred glanced over once again, Amberley met her gaze with a smile, startling Mildred into quickly burying her face in her bowl. With a sigh, Amberley thought to herself. It seems like I was really a monster! Devlin didn’t dare to stay with her, and her younger sister was scared to death of her. Yet, everything that had happened was a result of her own actions. Now, all she could do was to strive to show everyone how much she had changed. In this lifetime, she was determined to love her family deeply and protect them fiercely. After finishing their meal, Amberley didn’t retreat to her room. Instead, she cheerfully suggested, “Mom, let me take Mildred to school!” “Oh… Okay.” Yvette was taken aback for a moment, but then she eagerly agreed. She knew that Mildred would be thrilled. Upon entering Mildred’s room, Yvette crouched down to adjust her daughter’s collar. With a gentle smile, she asked, “Mildred, are you happy that Amberley is taking you to school today?” Yvette still dared not address Amberley as Mildred’s sister because she knew that Amberley despised being addressed as that by Mildred. Thus, over the years, they had grown accustomed to this. “Yes…” Mildred said, her head lowered shyly. Her voice was as soft as a whisper. “Remember to behave, okay?” Yvette gently caressed Mildred’s head, leading her out of the room. “Mildred, let’s go. I will take you to school.” With a smile, Amberley walked over and gently took hold of Mildred’s tiny hand. When her sister suddenly took her hand, Mildred couldn’t help but feel a surge of joy. She lowered her head, hiding the happiness that filled her eyes. Despite her best efforts, she was still too young to hide her thoughts. She couldn’t control her wandering eyes, which would occasionally steal glances at her sister’s profile. Her flushed little ears betrayed her current embarrassment. After stepping out, Amberley realized she had no idea where Mildred was studying. As a sister, she had never really taken an interest in Mildred’s life. Now that she had finally allowed herself to care, she realized the situation was not as easily resolved as she had thought. Feeling rather embarrassed, Amberley subtly rubbed her ear and asked with a hint of guilt, “Mildred, which kindergarten do you go to?” Mildred didn’t dare to look up and speak loudly to her sister. She whispered, “I’m in Class 10.”
