- Chapter 13 He Became Shy
- The following morning, Mildred rose early. She was eager to find Amberley, keen to discover if the latter had returned to her former self. As a result, the moment she pushed open Amberley’s bedroom door, she discovered Amberley and Devlin sleeping together. Upon noticing her, Devlin gestured a “shush” sign at her, then waved her away. After Mildred left the room, she was quite upset. She couldn’t understand why Devlin was allowed to share a bed with Amberley, while she was denied the same privilege. “Mommy, I want to sleep with Amby tonight.” After descending the stairs, Mildred found her mother in the kitchen and shared her thoughts with her. Upon hearing her daughter’s words, Yvette couldn’t help but object, “No, you can’t. Doing so would disturb your sister’s rest.” “Why is it that Devvy can do it? Wouldn’t he disturb Amby’s sleep?” Upon hearing this, Mildred instantly felt upset. How could she have disturbed Amberley’s rest while she was sleeping? To put it bluntly, her mother simply did not want her to share a bed with her sister. Upon hearing this, Yvette expressed her astonishment, “What did you just say? Amberley and Devlin…” Yvette excitedly covered her mouth, realizing that Amberley had accepted her son. “They slept together. I discovered earlier when I visited Amby’s room.” Mildred pouted, expressing her dissatisfaction. She believed her mother was lying to her. Why was it that Devlin could share a bed with Amberley, but she couldn’t? “Mildred, Devlin and Amberley are married now, just like how Mommy and Daddy are a couple, so they can share a bed.” Yvette could only explain to her daughter using simple and understandable words. Their relationship as a young married couple was thriving at the time, so naturally, she couldn’t let their daughter interfere with that. Mildred murmured in a seemingly understanding yet confused tone, “Then I want to marry Amby too.” Yvette was at a loss for words. This silly child is spouting such nonsense. Yvette gently patted her daughter’s tiny head. “What nonsense are you talking about? You can’t marry Amberley, okay?” Of course, Mildred didn’t understand what her mother meant by this. Why couldn’t she? Is it true that a person can only marry one person, just like how Mommy and Daddy are married, and they can’t marry anyone else? Is that how it works? After grumbling a few times, Amberley rubbed her head against Devlin’s waist before finally waking up, only to find Devlin staring at her with wide-open eyes. She glanced over with a smile and asked in a languid tone, “When did you wake up?” Devlin’s cool voice echoed, stating, “Just now.” In truth, he had awakened quite early, having hardly slept at all throughout the night. Aside from Amberley’s occasional encroachments into his personal space, there were countless twists and turns in his heart, causing him endless sorrow and sleepless nights. “What time is it? Is it time to get up?” She had slept exceptionally well that night, feeling as if she was basking in sunshine. The memory of the gloomy, damp basement seemed to have completely vanished from her mind. “It’s seven o’clock.” Amberley found that this person was truly reserved. Their conversations were limited to a straightforward question-and-answer format. He was extremely sparing with his words. Feeling playful, she leaned over and planted a kiss on Devlin’s cheek. Seeing his face remain as usual but his ear tips turning red, Amberley finally broke into laughter. She gave Devlin another kiss before finally getting out of bed. She was determined to uncover the hidden intentions he was harboring. Once again, Devlin felt the irregular rhythm of his own heartbeat. His heart was always easily stirred by Amberley, causing it to flutter uncontrollably. Seeing that Amberley had gone to freshen up, he, too, rose from the bed and headed to the walk-in closet to change his clothes. Amberley pushed open the door to the walk-in closet, only to find Devlin, shirtless. This individual rarely ventured outside throughout the year, resulting in an overly fair complexion. Coupled with a leg condition, he invariably projected the image of a frail young man. Yet, his chiseled abs immediately captivated Amberley’s attention. She never expected him to have such a great physique. Was this what they meant by someone who looks even better without their clothes on? At this point, Devlin could no longer feign composure. He quickly used his clothes to cover himself, his face flushing a deep shade of red. Amberley discovered that only during such moments, would he reveal his genuine emotions, such as the shyness he was displaying now. Did this person mistake her for a rogue? Amberley was extremely frustrated. They were already married, so why was he still being so guarded around her? She intentionally moved closer, yanking the piece of clothing from Devlin’s hand. Then, swiftly, she helped him put it over his head. “Lift your arms,” Amberley prompted him. With his face flushed red, Devlin quickly slipped his arms into his sleeves. After being personally assisted by Amberley in changing his shirt, Devlin dropped a casual, “I’m off to freshen up,” before wheeling himself away without a backward glance as if making his escape. It was only then that Amberley realized that he was just a boy two years her senior. Gone was his usual composure and depth, replaced by a youthful vitality that seemed fitting for his age at that moment. It seemed as though she had figured out how to interact with Devlin, allowing him to no longer hide his emotions. Yet, it seemed as if she was being forced to act indecently toward Devlin. Tch! How could it be considered improper if he’s my husband? Come on, Amberley. Don’t back down, and go for it! Amberley was psyching herself up. She slipped into a red dress and paused, seemingly lost in thought as she zipped it up. Then, she emerged from the walk-in closet. “Devlin, could you help me zip this up? I tried a few times but couldn’t manage it.” As she spoke, Amberley turned around, crouching down to reveal her fair and immaculate back to Devlin. Devlin was baffled. The glaring expanse of fair skin made Devlin’s hand tremble a few times. He simply closed his eyes, quickly zipping it up. Unfortunately, he pulled too hard, causing the zipper to shoot up to the top and derail… Devlin was left questioning his existence, gripping the zipper pull in his hand. He had managed to botch up even such a minor task. Upon turning around, Amberley noticed what was in Devlin’s hand, and she couldn’t help but let out a chuckle. This was her newly purchased dress. How on earth did he manage to do that? Upon hearing Amberley’s laughter, Devlin felt somewhat embarrassed. He really didn’t mean to do it. When Amberley remembered her mother’s advice to go out more often, she feigned displeasure and said, “This is my new dress you’ve ruined, so you owe me. As punishment, you’re accompanying me this afternoon to go shopping for a new one.” Unexpectedly, Devlin, who usually followed Amberley’s words without question, opposed her this time. He said in a deep voice, “I have something to do this afternoon. I will compensate you for the dress.” After he had finished speaking, he pushed the wheelchair and left. He didn’t want to go out, especially not with Amberley. He was certain that he wouldn’t be able to escape the judgmental whispers and unabashed stares of others, something he couldn’t bear. Amberley was rendered speechless. It seems like getting him to go out is truly a tough task! Patience is the only way forward. There’s no need to rush things. After changing into a fresh set of clothes in the walk-in closet, Amberley finally descended the stairs. Mildred had already taken a seat next to her, her large, sparkling eyes gazing at Amberley.
