- Chapter 12 Sharing A Room
- After taking a bath, Amberley slipped into her favorite silk nightgown and went to the next room to find her husband, Devlin. She pushed open the door to Devlin’s room, only to find him sitting in his wheelchair, gazing out the window. A palpable aura of loneliness and desolation surrounded him. Amberley felt a pang of regret, her original plan was to surprise him. However, she hadn’t anticipated getting caught up with Mildred, which led to her not being able to inform him in time. She walked in and wrapped her arms around Devlin’s neck from behind. The sudden waft of fragrance snapped Devlin out of his thoughts, his body instantly tensing. The arms encircling his neck, the sensation of skin against skin, left him too afraid to move. “Amb… Amberley, could you… could you let go of me?” Even though Devlin was infatuated with her tender charm, he knew all too well that she did not belong to him. “What if I don’t let go?” Amberley leaned in close to Devlin’s ear, the warmth of her breath causing his heart to flutter. Despite his best efforts to maintain a cool and clear mind, he found himself wavering once again. Without waiting for Devlin’s response, Amberley released him. She began to push his wheelchair, moving toward the outside. Devlin felt a wave of panic surge through him. It was only after he had regained his composure that he realized he had been ushered into Amberley’s room. Huh? Wasn’t I supposed to be guided to the new room? How did I end up in Amberley’s room? Amberley handed Devlin his pajamas directly and said, “From now on, this is your room.” Without waiting for Devlin’s objection, Amberley had already ushered him into the bathroom. Then, she stepped back and closed the bathroom door for him. After all was done, Amberley covered her flushed face. Even though she had made up her mind to be with Devlin, the thought of them sharing the same bed that night still made her feel a bit shy. In their past life, Sherman was with her. The extent of their romantic interactions was merely holding hands. Once, she thought that Sherman respected her, which was why he never crossed the line. It was only later that she realized, from start to finish, that he had merely been using her. She guessed even holding hands must have been a struggle for him. After all, his love for Cressida was so profound that only death could part them. Given the circumstances, Amberley vowed to do everything in her power to ensure they ended up together, to let them truly be with each other. Devlin sat in the bathroom, dumbfounded, clutching the clothes in his arms. He remained motionless for quite some time. What does Amberley mean by this? Am I going to live here from now on? If it was merely to deceive her parents, she didn’t have to push herself to such lengths. Devlin found himself unable to decipher Amberley anymore. Her actions could easily lead him to misunderstandings. His hard-earned clarity was on the verge of being clouded again. “Devlin, are you all right? What’s taking you so long?” The sound of persistent knocking and her concerned voice echoed from outside the door. Amberley had been waiting for a long time, and when Devlin didn’t emerge, she became somewhat uneasy. She approached the bathroom door, pressing her ear against it to listen. Realizing there was no sound of water or any movement, she finally knocked on the door and called out for him. “Oh, I’m fine. I’ll be done in no time.” Devlin didn’t have time to think it over thoroughly. He could only take it one step at a time. He swiftly took a shower, finishing in no time at all. Only then did he open the door from the inside, wheeling himself out as he emerged. And so, Amberley watched as a handsome man emerged from his bath, clad in a blue silk sleepwear, identical in fabric to the slip dress she wore. His hair was still dripping wet, drops of water trickling down his cheeks to his neck. It was then that Amberley caught sight of his delicate, fair collarbone. Without realizing it, Amberley swallowed, finally understanding why some people would marvel at the sight of collarbones. In an attempt to conceal the budding feelings of affection stirring within her, Amberley hastily fetched a dry towel from the bathroom. While drying his hair, she chided him, “You’re a grown man, yet you can’t even dry your hair properly. Be careful or you’ll catch a cold.” Devlin’s heart was in utter turmoil. The current situation was simply too overwhelming for him to maintain a clear head. Amberley showed concern for him, even going as far as to dry his hair. Although her tone was often harsh, he knew that beneath her sharp words, she was truly soft-hearted. Amberley dried his hair, then guided him toward the vanity table. She then took out a hairdryer and started to blow-dry his hair for him. She slipped her fingers into Devlin’s hair, causing a flutter in his heart. His heartbeat pounded relentlessly, refusing to cease. He quietly thanked his lucky stars that the roar of the hairdryer drowned out the uncontrollable pounding of his heart. After drying Devlin’s hair, Amberley gently pushed him toward the edge of the bed. “Go ahead and sleep. I’m just going to the bathroom.” In order to preserve Devlin’s pride, Amberley chose not to intervene. She feigned a trip to the toilet. Upon hearing the bathroom door close, Devlin took the opportunity while she was away to push himself up onto the bed. He lay there for a while. Only after she was inside the bathroom did Amberley deliberately press the flush button on the toilet. As the sound of the flushing began, she then opened the door and stepped out. From the other side, Amberley climbed onto the bed, intentionally instructing Devlin, “Devlin, turn off the lights.” Upon hearing this, Devlin immediately extended his long arm and turned off the lamps. After turning off the lights, Devlin maintained the same sleeping position he had earlier, with his hands neatly placed on his chest. But in this darkness, his sight was impaired, causing his sense of hearing and smell to become unusually sharp. Every breath he took seemed to be laced with the fresh scent of her body wash lingering on her skin after a bath. Even her slightest movement, he was keenly aware of. The distance between them seemed to have been drawn incredibly close, so close that he wished time could forever stand still at this very moment. How wonderful that would be… The darkness of her surroundings kept Amberley awake as if she had returned to that pitch-black basement, which filled her with terror. Amberley figured that, after all, Devlin was her husband, and she no longer desired a divorce. They were bound to be husband and wife forever. So, without further ado, she decided to throw herself at Devlin, wrapping her arms around his waist. Devlin was startled. He was taken aback as he embraced her delicate, fragrant warmth. Unlike last night when Amberley was drunk and not fully conscious, now she was sober and willingly throwing herself into his arms. What should he do, push her away? But he was a sly one, secretly harboring feelings. He couldn’t bear to, nor was he willing to. Embracing Devlin’s waist, Amberley finally felt a sense of security, dispelling the fear within her heart. It was not until Devlin heard the faint sound of Amberley’s snoring that he mustered up the courage. He reached out and wrapped his arms around her slender waist. He knew his actions were deplorably underhanded, yet he couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of satisfaction. It was as if a wanderer in the desert had stumbled upon an oasis. Suddenly, Amberley moved slightly, startling Devlin who quickly withdrew his hand as if caught in a guilty act, and properly placed it on his chest. After waiting for a while, he realized it was all just needless worry. Just as he was about to reach out again, Amberley’s leg beat him to it, extending directly and pressing down on his empty pant leg. It felt like a bucket of cold water was poured over Devlin’s head, causing him to abandon all his inappropriate inner schemes.
