- Chapter 10 Stunned By A Kiss
- “Didn’t I bring you some water? I remember specifically telling you when I brought it up. Did you already finish such a large jug of water?” Unaware of her son’s hidden intentions, Yvette inadvertently revealed the truth with a single sentence. Devlin feigned composure, casually tossed out a “I forgot,” and then he left. “Forgot… You’ve forgotten?” Left alone, Yvette watched her son’s retreating figure, murmuring in hesitation, “How could he possibly forget something like this?” It doesn’t make sense. This has been Devlin’s habit for so many years. Generally in the mornings, when time’s short, he’ll occasionally go downstairs for a drink of water and a little stroll. Yet, every afternoon, he’ll never descend the stairs. The water he drinks will always be prepared in advance, carried up in a water jug. Sometimes, he would carry it up himself, and other times, I would assist in bringing it up for him. Yvette was taken aback by her son’s sudden statement about forgetting that daily routine. Could it be that he had studied to the point of foolishness? Why did his memory suddenly take such a drastic dip? Devlin glanced at the pitcher on the table, suddenly realizing just how poorly crafted his earlier excuse had been. After many years had passed, Amberley realized she had almost forgotten everything she should and shouldn’t have forgotten. She understood each individual word in the textbook, but when they were strung together, she was lost. Many of the technical terms were beyond her comprehension. Given her current situation, the only option was for her to revisit the old textbooks and study them all over again. Amberley got up, ready to head to Devlin’s room to retrieve the books she had previously stored there. Devlin found himself staring as Amberley appeared once again in his room, his gaze never leaving her. He noticed her flipping through a pile of books. She then proceeded to pull out a few more. When Amberley turned around, she noticed that Devlin was looking at her. So, she leaned her face closer to him and playfully asked, “Tell me. Do I have anything written on my face?” Before him was an enlarged face, the features of which had been etched into his heart and mind countless times over. Devlin was taken aback, his nostrils filled with the lingering scent of Amberley. The warmth of her words still clung to his cheeks from when she spoke earlier. Devlin felt that they were incredibly close at that moment, so much so that the air around them seemed to thin a little. He found it somewhat difficult to breathe; his heartbeat had quickened. Amberley, with her sharp eyes, noticed a blush creeping onto Devlin’s ears. It was as if she had discovered a new world – Devlin was actually capable of feeling embarrassed. I was almost fooled by his seemingly nonchalant expression. “Devlin, why are your ears so red?” With a deliberate air of curiosity, Amberley asked, even as she prepared to give a playful pinch. Caught off guard, Devlin hastily grabbed Amberley’s hand before he even had time to think. By the time he realized he was holding her hand, he panicked and promptly let go. Amberley was baffled. She couldn’t help but doubt herself, wondering if she was some sort of monster. After all, Devlin had been so frightened that he’d immediately let go of her hand… He just tossed it aside. What’s going on here? I’m starting to doubt if he actually likes me. “Amberley, I… I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to touch you,” Devlin apologized carefully, his head hung low. Only then did Amberley realize that Devlin was worried about her getting upset. However, why would she be upset? “I wasn’t angry! Why are you apologizing? A touch is just a touch,” Amberley said nonchalantly. Upon hearing this, Devlin immediately lifted his head, wanting to see if Amberley was really not angry. Seeing that Amberley’s complexion was normal, he finally felt at ease. “Why are you afraid of me getting angry? Have I ever said anything in the past that hurt you?” Amberley held onto Devlin’s hand, but she could distinctly feel his stiffness. She felt her journey of doting on her husband was a long one. She wondered just how deeply she had hurt Devlin in the past, that a simple hand-holding could make him so tense. Devlin’s mind went blank, and all his senses seemed to shut down at that moment, leaving only the amplified sensation of a soft touch in his palm. “Why have you stopped talking?” Amberley looked at the bewildered Devlin, waving her other hand in front of his eyes. Only then did Devlin react, hastily withdrawing his hand from Amberley’s grasp. His hands were tightly clasped together, resting on his lap. It was as though he was trying to hold onto the lingering sensations within his grasp, keeping them close. “Why have you gone silent? It’s okay if you don’t want to talk. But from now on, you’re free to touch me. I’ve given you permission.” After she finished speaking, Amberley leaned down and planted a kiss on Devlin’s cheek, saying, “Consider that my seal of approval.” After teasing Devlin, Amberley picked up her book and left immediately. Devlin sat alone in his room, his fingertips gently tracing the spot where Amberley had just kissed him, over and over again. That light peck was like a gentle breeze brushing past his cheek, fleeting before he could fully register it. Only those who realized too late were left behind, immersed in their memories, beginning to search for the remnants of that wonderfully tactile experience they had just had. Devlin remained seated like this until the sky was shrouded in darkness, with only a few stars twinkling faintly, their light blooming alone in the dark. “Amby, Devvy, dinner’s ready.” Mildred scampered over on her short legs, her adorable voice announcing that dinner was ready. Upon hearing the sound, Amberley opened the door and lifted the panting Mildred into her arms, then went next door to call for Devlin. “Devlin, it’s dinner time.” Amberley pushed open the door, only to find Devlin’s room shrouded in darkness. Despite calling out, there was no response from him. All she saw was someone seated at the same spot when she left that afternoon, bathed in the moonlight. Amberley was stupefied. Did my kiss make him lose his mind? Left with no other choice, she had to fight fire with fire. Amberley reached out, covering Mildred’s eyes, before leaning down to plant another kiss on Devlin. “Are you awake yet? Time to eat,” she said with a smile. This sensation… he had spent the entire afternoon searching for it, but it was only when Devlin suddenly awoke that he realized it. It was then that he realized Amberley had somehow ended up by his side. Did… Did Amberley just kiss him again? The mere thought of such a possibility made Devlin’s ears start to burn again. Regrettably, the darkness of the night served as his perfect camouflage, preventing Amberley from noticing that. “It’s dinner time. Let’s go. Cover your eyes. I’m turning on the lights.” As Amberley spoke, she turned on the lights, the bright illumination chasing away the darkness that filled the room. Simultaneously, she removed her hand from Mildred’s eyes. “Amby, why did you cover my eyes just now?” Mildred asked, puzzled. Unfazed, Amberley, renowned for her thick skin, lied smoothly, “It’s because I was about to turn on the light. When someone suddenly switches on the light in a dark room, it can hurt their eyes.” When Devlin heard Amberley’s words, a subtle smile unconsciously crept up on his face as he followed behind. Yvette gently lifted Mildred, who was clinging to Amberley’s neck, and took her to wash her hands. After washing her hands, Mildred returned, acting as if her mother wasn’t even there. She ran over to her sister, Amberley, with a lively bounce in her step.
