- Chapter 1 Regretting The Past
- In a dank and gloomy basement, lice and cockroaches scurried about unhindered. The mice had truly made this place their home, moving all their stolen goods here in heaps. There were also newborn, snowy white baby mice nestled against a piece of clothing, warming their bodies. Following the trail of the fabric, a woman with disheveled hair and a face smeared with grime could be seen. She was beaten until she was black and blue, lying motionless on the ground. Her tattered clothing revealed her distressing back, a sight too horrific to bear. Countless whip scars crisscrossed, a chaotic blend of old and new wounds interwoven together. A cockroach skittered across her exposed skin, prompting her first hint of a reaction as her body trembled unsteadily. The mother mouse didn’t seem to notice her fear. Instead, she unabashedly carried her little ones over to her hair. She had discovered that the seaweed-like tresses were warmer, making them a suitable nest for her tiny offspring. With a resounding clang, the iron door to the basement was flung open. The mother mouse, frightened by the sudden noise, hurriedly moved her babies to the side. Cockroaches, too, scattered at the sound, scurrying away from the woman on the floor. The woman on the ground remained motionless, even after the loud noise. What followed was a bout of whipping, a daily occurrence. Previously, she would furiously curse them out in a fit of rage, but now she had been beaten into numbness, left devoid of any strength in her body. Living a life worse than death, hidden from the world, she didn’t know how much longer she could endure. Would anyone come to rescue her? “Amberley, you truly don’t realize the blessing you have. You can’t even begin to understand how much I envy you. Everyone knows you died in a car accident, yet Devlin, the one you abandoned and left disabled, is still searching for you like a fool all over the world. Unfortunately… How could I possibly let him find you? So, I merely fiddled with his car a bit, and he’s still lying in the ICU now. Whether he can hang onto his life is another matter altogether.” A woman, dressed in a striking red dress and towering heels, confidently strode in. She held a long whip in her hand, exuding an air of authority and dominance. Her pair of glossy eyes stared intently at the woman lying on the ground, reminiscent of a venomous snake spitting out its dart. Why on earth did that disabled man look down on her? It was already generous of her not to despise him for his disability. Yet, he had the audacity to say that she wasn’t even worthy of carrying that despicable Amberley’s shoes. Now, who exactly is the unworthy one? Amberley Tausend, who was lying on the ground, finally reacted upon hearing that they had hurt Devlin Calderon. Struggling, she pushed herself up from the ground. Her face was so smeared with blood that her expression was indiscernible. All that could be seen was the fury brimming in her wide almond-shaped eyes. She glared at the haughty woman standing before her as if her gaze could poison and let out a scornful laugh. “Cressida, you really are pitiful. I never imagined you’d envy me, having feelings for Devlin! So, was your daily torment of me driven by jealousy?” The little secret that Cressida Fallon had been hiding deep within her heart was exposed, and in a fit of furious rage, she lashed out, her whip striking against Amberley’s back. She scoffed, sneering, “Jealous of you? You wish! If Devlin, being the blind fool he is, likes a numbskull like you, then he deserves what he gets.” The sound of the whip striking against flesh grew louder with each lash, sending the roaches and rats scurrying into the dark corners in fear. As Cressida was hitting, she taunted, “What are you so pleased about? Just look at my diamond ring. It’s a gift from Sherman for our upcoming wedding. Are you upset? The man you love doesn’t even like you. He’s just been using you, hasn’t he?” As she spoke, Cressida unlocked her phone. Amberley glanced at the screen, where Sherman Jolliffe stood on stage, resplendent in a well-tailored, high-end suit. He held the microphone with an air of supreme confidence, facing the assembled media reporters with a triumphant smile. “May I ask, Mr. Jolliffe, why did you decide to acquire Tausend Group? As far as we know, Tausend Group holds no value. Wouldn’t this be an unwise move for the development of Jolliffe Group? There are rumors circulating that this is due to the late daughter of the Tausend family. Could you confirm if this is the case?” “True, my decision to acquire Tausend Group this time was indeed not entirely rational. However, Ms. Tausend is my friend. I couldn’t stand by and watch the legacy of a deceased friend be destroyed. I wanted to protect the former Tausend Group in my own way, by integrating it into Jolliffe Group.” “Mr. Jolliffe, your noble actions are truly commendable. I believe that the late Ms. Tausend would be greatly comforted knowing she had a friend like you.” “We notice that you’re wearing a wedding ring, Mr. Jolliffe. Are you getting married soon?” “Indeed. I wish to express my gratitude to my fiancée, Cressida, for her unwavering support and dedication. Here, at this press conference, I’d like to convey a message to her. Cressida, I love you. Until death do us part.” Amberley couldn’t bear to listen any longer. She harbored a deep resentment toward this despicable couple, wishing she could make them pay for their actions in the most gruesome way. They had conspired to stage her car accident and fake her death. Sherman, the scoundrel, abused her trust and secretly colluded with the finance department to embezzle all of Tausend Group’s funds. This ultimately led to the bankruptcy of the company. He even had the audacity to claim that his acquisition of Tausend Group was to help her? How absurd, he had been eyeing Tausend Group for quite a while. Using Tausend Group’s own money to buy it out… That’s truly the pinnacle of shamelessness. Regrettably, she had been blind to the truth, unknowingly inviting the wolf into her home. Amberley looked at Cressida, her dear cousin, with an overwhelming sense of loathing. She had poured her heart and soul into her uncle’s family, but they had stabbed her in the back. In collusion with Sherman, they had tricked her into going on a trip, only to stage a fake car accident halfway through, claiming she had died. They then locked her in this basement, beating her day after day. “All of you will die a miserable death.” If Amberley’s eyes could have held knives, Cressida would have probably been cut to pieces by now. “Don’t worry. If anyone’s going to die, it’ll be you first. Oh, no, that’s not right. It’s you who will die a miserable death. When I was on my way here, Sherman advised me to take it easy on you. Your looks still hold some value, and there are plenty of people who would want to be with you. We can’t waste such a good resource. It would be a shame to let you die so easily.” Cressida smacked Amberley’s grimy face, a mocking smile playing on her lips. It was as if she was saying that if not for the worth of that face, she would have marred it long ago. No sooner had Cressida finished speaking than a burly bodyguard appeared. He hoisted Amberley onto his shoulder as if he were carrying a sack of grain, before tossing her into the car. The car pulled away from the basement, and Amberley knew she was about to enter another hellhole. She was far from resigned to this… She mustered all her strength to get up, and using the front seat for support, she managed to prop herself up. She reached out and wrapped her arms around the neck of the bodyguard who was driving. Using him as leverage, she held on tightly, pressing down on his neck. Caught off guard, the bodyguard frantically steered the wheel, causing the car to swerve erratically on the road. Meanwhile, with his other hand, he tried to pry open Amberley’s grip. A destructive loathing was etched on Amberley’s face, with all her strength concentrated in her arm. She exerted every ounce of her power, pushing downward, prepared to risk everything, even if it meant mutual destruction. She was determined not to let Sherman use her as a tool to curry favor with others. With a loud crash, the car smashed through the railings, toppling off the overpass. As the vehicle descended, Amberley found herself wondering if this was truly the end for her. Yet, she was consumed with hatred. Her foolishness had cost her dearly, yet she was unable to exact revenge on her nemesis.
