- Chapter 10
- Seeing the look on Amanda’s face, Richard Bowman let out a light chuckle. “Looks like you’ve figured it all out.”
- At that moment, Richard was sitting on the rooftop of a building in Silvermoor, thousands of feet above the ground.
- He was dressed plainly, his handsome face marked by exhaustion. Even though he wasn’t yet thirty, streaks of grey hair had already appeared
- He exhaled a deep sigh, his tone unexpectedly carrying a hint of amusement. “Thanks for saying I was wrongfully accused. After all these years, I was almost convinced I’d actually done those things myself.”
- Amanda tightened her grip on her hands and suddenly asked, “Are you at peace with it?”
- Richard froze for a second and then gave a bitter smile. “What can I do even if I’m not? They’re too powerful. To them, I’m just
- an ant.”
- “But to your mother, you were the world.” Amanda’s voice grew firm as she added, ‘Are you really going to hurt her for those who don’t care about you? Don’t you remember the last thing she said to you?”
- At her words, Richard’s expression grew serious, and he was lost in memory. Of course, he remembered. At the time, his mother was hanging on by a thread, unable to even open her eyes, but she forced herself to say two words, “Live on.”
- But Richard couldn’t even make it. The heavy debt suffocating him was something he’d never be able to pay off in his lifetime. His mother was gone, and he felt like his life had lost all meaning.
- Amanda’s hands moved quickly, her brow furrowing tighter as she divined something. Suddenly, she spoke, ‘Have you ever thought about how your mother would feel about your decision?”
- Richard’s face turned grim. “My mom would probably think I’m a coward.
- “No.” Amanda’s voice was certain. “She wouldn’t blame you. She’d just feel sorry for you. Do you want to see her again?”
- Hearing this, Richard froze, his breath catching in his throat. “H–How would I see her?
- “Close your eyes,” said Amanda.
- Richard did as he was told, and as he did, Amanda formed a complex symbol with her hands. A beam of white light shot from her fingertips. The next moment, Richard felt a chill in his eyes and instinctively opened them. He was immediately frozen in shock.
- Beneath his feet, he saw his mother, desperately holding onto his legs, as if afraid he might fall off the edge.
- His eyes welled up with tears, and he choked up. “Mom…”
- Seeing Richard’s reaction, Nina quickly floated up to him, gently stroking his face. “Richie, my dear.”
- Richard was overcome with emotion, and he sobbed uncontrollably. “Mom, I’m so sorry. I just didn’t have the courage to keep living. I’m too weak. I’m sorry.”
- Nina’s heart ached for her son, and she pulled Richard into an embrace. “It’s not your fault, honey. It’s those people’s fault. I only blame myself for being sick and making you suffer. If I hadn’t been ill, you wouldn’t have had to go into acting and get involved in that mess.”
- Richard shook his head vigorously. He never regretted it. If it hadn’t been for acting, he wouldn’t have earned enough money to get his mother the best doctors. But in the end, his mother still died because of him. He blamed himself for not being strong enough.
- They hugged each other and apologized to each other. They had been through so much together and understood each other better than anyone.
- After crying
- for a long while, Nina finally stopped and took a deep breath. Her voice cracked as she said. “Richie, if living is just too hard, then… then come with me.”
- She nearly choked on the last part of her words. She would’ve given anything for her son to live a long and happy life, but she knew too well how hard it was for him to keep going.
- 1/3
- Richard looked at his mother, but his eyes slowly started to shine with lights.
- Amanda’s words echoed in his mind. “Are you a
- you at peace with this?”
- If he died, nobody would care. Even if people found out, they’d just say it was his own fault for being so clueless. The haters would be cheering and celebrating. No one would mourn his death, except for his mom.
- But now, he was about to hurt the only person in this world who still cared about him.
- Richard asked himself if he was really okay with that.
- No, he wasn’t.
- At that moment, Richard’s heart gave a firm answer. As long as he was alive, there was still hope. At least, his mother would be at peace
- With that thought in mind, he said, “Mom. I’m not going to die.”
- Hearing this, Nina was ecstatic. That’s great, Richie. Have you figured it out?”
- Richard nodded and pulled his legs back. But as he was about to jump down to stand, his body slipped, and he plummeted down the building
- “Richie!” Nina’s face turned pale as she screamed in a panic.
- The sound of sharp wind rushed through the live stream channel, and viewers instantly realized what was happening. Their hearts tightened, and they couldn’t help but gasp.
- Viewer A: [Oh my, started his career in high school, a national superstar, banned three years ago… I think I know who he is.] Viewer B: [Yeah. I think it’s Richard]
- Viewer C: [Did he really just see his mom? But didn’t they say his mom passed away? So he must be seeing a ghost?)
- Viewer D: [I wanna know too. I wanna see ghosts.]
- Viewer E: [He was exposed years ago for putting on air, using charity as a cover to harass kids. Gross. How is he still alive!“]
- Viewer F: [Man, be more respectful. Ms. Corkery said he was wrongfully accused.]
- Viewer E: [What she said is true? There are kids who testified. Kids don’t lie.]
- Viewer F: [You’re wrong, kids lie the most.]
- Viewer G: [Enough arguing, guys. I just wanna know what happened to Richard. He didn’t really jump, did he?]
- At that moment, a voice suddenly cut through the chat. “Someone jumped off the building”
- Everyone’s heart dropped upon hearing that.
- But then, another voice quickly followed. “He’s alive, thank goodness. He’s still breathing. Get him to the hospital now.” Billy, with his team, quickly moved Richard into the ambulance. He grabbed Richard’s phone and said. “Manda, he’s fine. Don’t worry
- Amanda sent the message to Billy earlier, telling him to come here because someone was about to jump down.
- They arrived just in time. If they had been even a few seconds late, Richard might not have made it. They barely got the life- -saving air cushion ready before he fell.
- Amanda did the divination and confirmed that Richard’s death ordeal had passed. She let out a relieved sigh and told Billy to hold the phone up to Richard’s ear.
- She said firmly. “They want us to die, but we’ll live and make it glorious. Even if we can’t kill them, we’ll sure as hell make them
- miserable”
- Richard silently thought, ‘It sounds like venting, but it actually makes sense. Alright, starting today, I’ll smile every day and ‘make those people who want to see me cry choke on their own frustration!’
- 2/31
- After hanging up the phone, Amanda glanced at the negative comments flooding the channel and said with a snort, “Watch your mouth, guys. Not everything you see is the truth. Use your brain for once. Don’t just swallow everything people feed you? The haters couldn’t take the insult and started attacking Amanda again, throwing snarky comments her way.
- You’re helping Richard? What are you, some kind of saint? Don’t tell me you like him. Well, you’re gonna be disappointed. He only likes kids. You’re too old for him.]
- Amanda held her baby–like checks and leaned in close to the camera with a mischievous grin. “Yeah, you’re the youngest of all Just be careful and don’t fall into the hands of some
- creeps.
- The hater was left speechless. The anger was boiling over.
