- Chapter 6 Gathering Talent
- Unfortunately, back then, she naively treated Cressida as family, never questioning how Cressida was able to arrange meetings with Sherman time and time again. It seemed that this despicable pair must have gotten together a long time ago. Cressida was essentially using Sherman as a pawn, deliberately luring her in under the pretense of helping her pursue her dream guy. “Hmm… All right, then. I’ll see him one more time.” Amberley didn’t reject the idea. She still wanted to keep Cressida on the line, to test their mettle. “All right. Once I’ve set up a meeting with him, I’ll send you the time and place.” Upon hearing, Cressida immediately knew that Amberley had not yet let go of Sherman. It was all just talk. In her heart, she couldn’t help but think of Amberley as a fool. No wonder her mother had said she could be used to their advantage. A sense of satisfaction filled Cressida’s heart. Apart from his disability, Devlin was superior to Sherman in every way. It was a pity that Amberley was blind to it. After hanging up the phone, Amberley started to chuckle. Cressida was playing mind games with her. Well, let’s see how I would outsmart Cressida in this lifetime! As she passed by a dessert shop, Amberley pulled her car to a stop. She knew that Devlin had a particular fondness for sweets and thought about buying some for him. Having been given a second chance at life, she was determined not to squander the opportunity bestowed upon her by the heavens. This time around, she was resolved to lavish her husband with exclusive affection. “Who is this man? Have you been with other men behind my back?” A man was questioning a fashionably dressed woman sitting across from him, using a photo on his phone as evidence. “So what? Have you even taken a look at yourself? You’re the picture of poverty from head to toe. Tch… which woman would even consider you, given your financial situation? I don’t mind it, but you have the audacity to complain about me seeing other men. Do you think you could support me on your own? I’m just trying to lighten your load.” The woman with the fiery red lips displayed not a shred of embarrassment. Instead, she scoffed at the man, looking down on him with an air of superiority as she admired her freshly manicured nails. Upon hearing her words, the man didn’t react with anger but instead, he laughed. He leaned in closer to the woman, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Is that so? Then you might as well make your living by sleeping with that man! You know what you remind me of? In ancient times, there was a more refined term for it. You’d be called a ‘courtesan’.” With a sharp smack, the woman raised her hand and slapped the man across the face. Furious, she snapped, “Igor Xenakis, watch your filthy mouth. If you’re such a loser that you can’t even support a wife, don’t blame her for finding someone who can. If I can get through the day, I will. If I can’t, I’ll leave. Do you really think I’m desperate for you?” After she finished speaking, the woman strutted away in her high heels, her demeanor as proud and haughty as a peacock. The man chuckled lightly, casually brushing his struck cheek as if it didn’t matter. Yet, the tension in his forehead and his other hand clenched into a fist laid bare his emotions. At that moment, he was like a furious lion, yearning to tear apart the woman who had betrayed him. As Amberley was about to leave, she heard a woman’s voice rise, shouting “Igor Xenakis”. This name made her unconsciously stop in her tracks. Once upon a time, Sherman’s right-hand man was a man named Igor. He was cunning and crafty, skilled at devising strategies. The crucial thing was his unwavering loyalty. Half of Jolliffe Group’s empire was built by his own hands. How could she possibly forget such an important person? Since she had been given a second chance at life, she was determined to cripple Sherman’s power, leaving him incapable of causing harm. Igor probably hadn’t encountered Sherman yet at that time, so she had to find this person first. Little did she know that when the man turned around, Amberley was genuinely startled. The face before her was unmistakably that of Igor, the man always seen by Sherman’s side. She would have never imagined, even in her wildest dreams, that Igor, this ruthless man, could ever find himself in such a pitiful state. Not only was he cuckolded by his wife, but he was also brazenly assaulted by the other party. Given that Igor was in such a desperate state, Amberley pondered that if she were to lend him a hand now, recognizing his potential. In the future, he would certainly be loyal to her and work tirelessly for Tausend Group! And so, Amberley approached, smiling as she asked, “Mr. Xenakis, are you interested in changing your job?” Igor looked at Amberley, who was still young and naive, and chuckled lightly. “Young lady,” he said, “I think you haven’t read enough books. Do I look like a wealthy man to you? Are you trying to swindle some rich folk?” Amberley was baffled. Did she really look like a swindler? Her face was as harmless as one could get. “Sir, you’ve misunderstood. I’m telling the truth. I am Amberley Tausend, the heiress of Tausend Group. I’m officially inviting you to join Tausend Group. We’re prepared to double your current salary and offer you a position in management. It may not be at a very high level to start, but I believe that with your capabilities, you’ll be able to secure a promotion swiftly.” Amberley really wanted to pull out a business card to prove her identity. However, she was still a student and hadn’t yet joined Tausend Group. How could she possibly have a business card? “The heiress of Tausend Group, haha… You sure have the guts to say that. But I must admit that the perks you mentioned are quite tempting. Unfortunately, I’m just a poor guy with little to my name; my abilities are limited. I’m afraid I may not be up to the task!” Igor smirked and turned to leave. He certainly didn’t have the time to listen to a kid’s aimless chatter. Amberley was absolutely livid. She was just a bit young. Why was she deemed so untrustworthy? “Igor, how is it that you, a top graduate from Hepham University’s financial management, are unable to handle this job?” Amberley didn’t have a clear recollection of Igor’s life history, but what she did remember was that he was invited back to give a lecture at Hepham University after he had made a name for himself. “Do you know me?” Only then did Igor stop in his tracks, quietly contemplating whether Amberley would be the type to trick any down-and-out individual into a multi-level marketing organization. “Of course. If I had no knowledge of your abilities, I wouldn’t have invited you to join Tausend Group. If you’re still not convinced, how about leaving your phone number? I can arrange for our company’s recruitment staff to contact you specifically. Does that sound good?” Amberley opted for a compromise. In this day and age, leaving a phone number shouldn’t result in being deceived, right? Igor figured there was no harm in leaving a phone number. After all, he held onto the slim chance that it might be true. “Sure, that works,” said Igor as he handed his phone number over to Amberley. Amberley recalled that Igor’s ex-wife had given birth to a son for him. Considering the age, the child should be around two years old now. So, she handed the dessert she was holding to Igor and said, “Mr. Xenakis, this is for your son. I look forward to your future involvement with Tausend Group.” Igor was taken aback. The other party had even found out about his child. Could they have really conducted a thorough investigation on him? “I just bought it from the store. Don’t worry. It’s not poisoned!” Amberley handed the dessert to Igor, then turned around and re-entered the dessert shop. She had given away Devlin’s dessert, so naturally, she had to buy him another one. She couldn’t possibly return home empty-handed.
