Chapter 13 – A Guilty Conscience

“Heh…” Nathan let out a low chuckle at Olivia’s reaction.

Even though the woman before him had changed significantly, some things about her remained the same. The more she resisted, the more suspicious she seemed.

His voice was cold. “I’ll know for sure once I take Liam for a paternity test.”

Before Olivia could react, Nathan suddenly applied force, pushing the door open. The resistance from Olivia’s hand instantly weakened, and she staggered slightly as the door swung wide.

At that moment, Liam walked out of the dining room.

The little boy had noticed his mother hadn’t returned for a while, so he had come to check on her. But when he looked up and saw Nathan standing there, his bright eyes lit up with excitement.

“Daddy! Why are you here?”

Unable to contain his joy, Liam dashed past Olivia and hugged Nathan’s leg.

Nathan took a slight step back from the impact, looking down at the little boy clinging to him.

Liam was so excited that he bombarded Nathan with questions. “Did you come to see me? Did you miss me?”

Nathan’s expression softened as he nodded. “Mm.”

Ethan, standing behind him, stepped forward with several bags in hand and smiled politely. “William, these are gifts for you. See if you like them.” He placed everything on the nearby table.

Just a glance at the packaging told Liam exactly what was inside—LEGO sets and limited-edition figurines!

He was ecstatic, about to nod eagerly when he suddenly caught sight of Olivia from the corner of his eye.

His joy faltered.

Liam hesitated for a moment before carefully concealing his excitement, trying not to appear too eager.

Olivia noticed it all.

She didn’t want Nathan to get close to Liam, yet seeing her son’s happiness made her heart ache.

She sighed inwardly before turning to Nathan. “You must have spent a fortune, Mr. Carter. How much was it? I’ll transfer you the money.”

Nathan’s face darkened.

The way she addressed him as Mr. Carter irritated him for some reason. But what angered him more was her attempt to pay him back.

His sharp gaze locked onto her. “I didn’t come here just to bring gifts. I came to take Liam for a DNA test today.”

He took a step forward, his voice filled with unwavering certainty. “I’ll be the one to determine if he’s my son.”

“As Liam’s guardian, I don’t agree,” Olivia stated firmly, refusing to back down.

Nathan smirked, his gaze filled with amusement. “You keep trying to stop me. Is it because you have a guilty conscience? Are you afraid I’ll find something?”

Olivia’s lips parted, but no words came out.

She realized that resisting too much only made her look suspicious.

If Nathan insisted on another test, Olivia wasn’t afraid of the results—but she was afraid of what would happen afterward.

Emily already despised her. If she found out the truth, Olivia feared she would never accept Liam.

A thought crossed Olivia’s mind, and her expression suddenly became calm.

“I just think it’s unnecessary,” she said evenly. “But since you insist, Mr. Carter, I won’t stop you. Do as you wish.”

Then, she lowered her gaze to Liam. “Go with Mr. Carter for the test and come back afterward.”

With that, she turned around and walked back into the dining room.

Mr. Valtor had prepared a delicious breakfast, but when Olivia picked up her spoon, she found that she had no appetite at all.

Meanwhile, Nathan swiftly took Liam away.

When they arrived at Beverly Hills, Liam was unusually quiet.

Nathan frowned slightly and sat down on the couch with Liam in his arms. He reached out and pinched the boy’s soft, fair cheeks.

“What’s wrong? Are you upset?” His voice was noticeably gentler than usual.

Liam clutched the fabric of Nathan’s suit and hesitated before looking up.

“What if…” he whispered. “What if I really am your son, Daddy?”

Nathan was momentarily stunned.

The little boy had only met him twice, yet he already trusted and accepted him so completely.

After a moment, Nathan smirked. “How is that possible? You already took a DNA test before. We’re just running another one so your mother will finally admit it.”

He ruffled Liam’s hair. “Don’t worry.”

Liam instantly felt reassured.

He wasn’t afraid at all—because deep down, he knew the truth.
