As soon as Haley spoke, everyone froze as if struck by lightning.
Even Haley herself was taken aback; she hadn’t expected that in her rage, she would accidentally reveal the secret about saving someone.
Her face turned ashen, and she nervously glanced toward her parents for help.
Logan and Evelyn’s expressions shifted drastically, but it was already too late to say anything. Todd and Nancy were just as shocked.
“You’re full of it.” Nancy snapped, glaring. “Do you really think we wouldn’t know who saved Alex?”
Todd turned to Alex, his face serious. “What’s going on here?”
Alex’s gaze flickered toward Ellie, his eyes uncertain. “Well… it’s not something I can explain in just a few words.”
Ellie sat expressionless next to Nancy, her back stiff and tense.
Her hands, gripping the cushion, subconsciously tightened around it, her knuckles turning white.
There couldn’t be this many coincidences. Both Ellie and Haley, at their most naive age, had saved a young boy.
“It’s impossible!” Nancy blurted. “You saved Alex? Do you have any proof?”
Nancy jumped up suddenly. “Without proof, the Warren family won’t acknowledge any of this.”
Haley, seeing that Nancy wasn’t backing down and seemed ready to leave, grew more desperate. “Of course I have proof! Alex himself confirmed it, and that’s why he’s been so nice to me.”
Haley turned to Alex, her voice rising in panic. “Alex, speak up! I sacrificed so much to save you; you can’t let everyone accuse me like this.”
Alex’s deep eyes locked on Ellie.
From the look in his eyes and the tone of his voice, it was as though he was speaking directly to Ellie. “When I was kidnapped, there was a girl who risked her life to save me.
“I took off the necklace I was wearing and gave it to her. I’ve checked, and the one Haley has is the same one.”
Ellie remained stoic on the couch, but a storm was raging inside her.
Haley had saved Alex, and Alex had given Haley a necklace.
And the man Ellie had saved also gave her a necklace.
Not long after Ellie joined the Warren family, she had offered her own necklace to Haley. But Haley had refused, and the necklace had mysteriously disappeared.
Ellie hadn’t thought much of it at the time and hadn’t made an effort to look for it.
Because deep down, she didn’t want to keep the necklace, nor did she want to see it again.
Thinking back, when she first arrived at the Warren family, she never let anyone into her room except Haley.
Ellie raised her eyes calmly to meet Haley’s gaze.
The more uneasy Haley looked, the more unsettled Ellie felt.
The boy Ellie had saved that day was badly injured, covered in blood. She couldn’t make out his face, but it couldn’t have been Alex.
‘It can’t be him, Ellie thought, her mind spiraling into confusion.
“Where’s the proof? Show it to me,” Ellie said, watching Nancy reach out to Haley for evidence, her heart pounding so violently it felt like it might leap out of her chest.

Haley hadn’t expected Alex to bring up the necklace. They had agreed that the secret of that necklace would remain between the two of them, with no third party knowing.
In a panic, Haley glanced at Ellie, then stubbornly lied. “I lost the proof, but Alex knows.”
“Ellie,” Nancy noticed Ellie’s pale face, and quickly pulled her up. “Why do you look so pale? Are you feeling unwell?”
Ellie pressed her aching chest, her face growing unnaturally white, “I think I stayed up too late.”
Nancy added, “If you want something out of this, bring the proof to the Warren family, and I’ll get you a check. With your kind of quality, dreaming of marrying Alex is just that, a dream.”
Noticing Ellie’s discomfort, Nancy wasn’t willing to waste any more time. She gave Todd and Alex a glance, then pulled Ellie out the door.
As soon as the Warren family members left, Evelyn hurriedly locked the door behind them.
