Meanwhile, Nathan just got back to Beverly Hills. He hadn’t slept a wink; his eyes were bloodshot red from exhaustion.
He came back for a fresh change of clothes and some work documents before heading back to the hospital. But when he was about to leave, his mother, Emily, showed up.
Nathan was surprised. “Mom? What brought you here?”
Emily walked up; her purse slung over her shoulder. “Didn’t even think to tell me what you’ve been up to? Looks like you’ve been busy!”
Nathan’s eyes narrowed into a line. “What do you mean?”
“Don’t play dumb! You’ve been blowing off Emma, canceling dinner with the Patels, and cozying up with this Olivia woman! What is going on with you?” Emily’s voice rose. Her voice turned shrill.
Nathan frowned. “What do you think I’m doing? You know better than anyone else!”
“What’s the point? The DNA test says it all, that kid isn’t yours! Why are you so stubborn?” Emily yelled, shaking with anger. What did Olivia have over him?
Emily knew Nathan didn’t always see eye to eye with her, but at least he had never opposed her so blatantly! Otherwise, Olivia wouldn’t have been so easily driven away five years ago if he had.
What had changed? Now, why was he suddenly fixated with Olivia again?
Listening to Emily, Nathan scoffed. He looked at her with a hard glare, “Why did you even ask? Shouldn’t you, of all people, know if Liam is mine?”
Emily froze. Her eyes widened in surprise. “What are you talking about?”
She had been monitoring him, worried he’d ask for another DNA test. But that hadn’t happened. So why the question now? Her heart began to race with fear.
Nathan saw her reaction and decided not to confront her directly. “It’s obvious, Mom. Remember five years ago? I got rid of Olivia for you. This time, stay out of my business with her!”
He shot his mother a disdainful look and headed for the door.
However, Emily wasn’t done with him yet.
She ran up and stopped him, her voice high–pitched. “Are you going to see Olivia? No way! Don’t you know everyone’s gossiping about what you did to Emma at the party last night?”
Furious, she continued, “I just can’t believe it! Emma is such a sweet girl. How could you hurt her like that? All for Olivia?”
Nathan finally lost his patience. “It doesn’t matter! I already told you there’s no engagement!”
“Refusing the engagement isn’t an option! Do you even care about me? What about Emma? She’s been by your side all this time. Can’t you see how much she cares? She’s no less than Olivia! I’m warning you, you will break up with Olivia and apologize to the Patel family, no matter what!”

I know about your feelings for her, but don’t forget – she’s the daughter of the man who murdered your father! There’s no place for her in the Carter family, ever! Remember whose family you belong to!”
Nathan felt a heavy weight slam into his chest. A sharp pain crupted from within him, followed by a crushing wave of despair.
