In the car on the way to the hospital, Olivia was burning up. She was losing consciousness in the back seat.
Nathan rushed her into the emergency room and summoned the doctor on duty to quickly check her temperature – it was a whopping 39.2 degrees Celsius!
“What?!” the doctor exclaimed. “She’s got a high fever yet still binged drink? We can’t give her a shot for that right now.” The doctor frowned at the thermometer reading.
Nathan frowned, too, looking at Olivia on the bed.
The size of her face barely matched his palm. Seeing it now burning red, he asked the doctor, concerned, “Is there anything we can do to cool her down fast?”
“Okay, let’s try some physical cooling methods first,” the doctor said.
Then he looked at Nathan. “Are you her boyfriend or husband? We’ll get some cooling patches, but you can get some cold water and help wipe her down first. Maybe that will bring her fever down. If the fever doesn’t break after she wakes, give her some medicine to reduce the fever.”
Nathan nodded solemnly. “Thank you, Doctor.”
The doctor left the room, leaving Nathan alone with his feverish love.
Elijah, ever observant, noticed Olivia’s need and quickly brought her cold water and towels. He even helped with the admission paperwork; after that, he stood guard outside her room.
Inside, Nathan sat by Olivia’s bed, wringing a towel to wipe her down.
This marked the first time since Olivia’s return that she and Nathan had been so peaceful face–to–face.
As Olivia drifted off to sleep, the cold, hard look in her eyes disappeared. In its place was a hint of softness, a flicker of the old Olivia everyone remembered.
Nathan watched her, a subtle change softening his gaze and movements.
As Elijah observed the unfolding scene, a sigh escaped him involuntarily. It had become apparent over the years that only Olivia had the power to thaw his boss’s icy facade.
Olivia’s fever raged all night, but it was gone when she woke up the next day. She opened her eyes, surprised to be lying in a hospital bed and feeling much better.
Suddenly, the door creaked open, and two figures rushed in. Benjamin and her son, Liam!
“Mommy!” the little one cried, launching himself onto the bed. “Daddy said you had a fever! Are you okay?”
Olivia’s brain finally booted up the hotel meeting with Nathan. Had he admitted her?
“Hey, I’m alright,” Olivia reassured Liam, a wave of guilt washing over her. “Sorry, sweetie, you must have been super worried.”
“I won’t do it again, promise,” Olivia said, giving her son’s head a soft pat.
Benjamin walked over, relief flooding his face. “Good to see you’re okay. I called you a bunch of times,

Liam beamed, grabbing his mother’s hand tightly. “As long as you’re feeling better now, Mommy, that’s all that matters.”
Benjamin’s eyes filled with concern as he gazed at Olivia. “Has the fever broken? Sure you’re okay?”
“Yeah, just a little drained,” Olivia mumbled.
“I thought… Mr. Martinez would be here,” Benjamin stammered. “Didn’t expect someone from the Carter family to be with you instead.” He blurted his confusion.
Olivia kept quiet.
Last night, a fever had knocked her out cold. Now, her memory was hazy. The only clear image was Nathan pulling her away from that creep. But everything after that was a void.
Liam also mentioned Nathan, so she figured he must have just left. Otherwise, he’d probably still be here.
Olivia was surprised that Nathan had stayed by her bedside throughout the night, only leaving at daybreak.
Despite the swirling doubts, she swallowed them down. “Just an accident,”
