Chapter 3: Speak with Me in Person

“Mr. Carter, please take a look at this!” Ethan exclaimed in shock, quickly scanning the document before handing it to Nathan.

Nathan, however, waved it off impatiently. “Stop wasting time.”

“No, this… this document seems real!” Ethan’s voice trembled as he explained hastily.

Nathan frowned and glanced at the paper, his sharp eyes quickly recognizing its authenticity. The information was legitimate! But he still couldn’t bring himself to believe the child was his.

“Who helped you falsify this DNA test? Where did you get this information?” Nathan asked coldly, scrutinizing the boy before him.

Liam, undeterred, answered earnestly, “What’s wrong with that? I didn’t fake it. I investigated everything myself!”

Nathan narrowed his eyes, trying to discern whether the boy was lying. Then, something clicked in his mind. Wait… this child is four years and three months old, and his last name is Monroe. As he reflected on the past five years, the only woman he had ever been with was…

Nathan’s unease intensified, and he stood up abruptly, his voice slightly strained. “You said your last name is Monroe? What’s your mom’s name?”

“Olivia Monroe,” Liam answered with a child’s honesty.

Nathan froze, stunned. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “Repeat that. What is her name?”

“Olivia Monroe. Daddy, don’t you know who Mommy is?” Liam looked up at him, a bit dejected.

Nathan’s silence was deafening, but his heart raced, his fingers trembling slightly. Olivia Monroe. It’s been five years! You’re finally back… after all this time.

Ethan, too, was shocked. He knew exactly who Olivia Monroe was. He also knew that she had disappeared after being expelled from Carter Manor five years ago. Nathan had searched high and low across Europe but couldn’t find her. He never imagined she would return like this—with a child.

After a brief pause, Nathan’s expression remained cold and hostile, though a hint of confusion lingered. “Where is your mommy? Did she send you to find me?”

“If she could hide for five years, why not stay hidden forever?” Nathan added, bitterness creeping into his tone.

Liam shook his head. “Mommy doesn’t know. I secretly came back to find you…” He paused, then added, “But Mommy must have realized by now and will come after me. Daddy, you need to protect me! Mommy’s going to punish me!” With that, he threw himself into Nathan’s arms.

Nathan was still angry, but the unexpected embrace stirred something in his heart. His hostile demeanor softened almost involuntarily. He couldn’t help but ask, “You said you came back on your own? Did you come alone?”

“No, I didn’t. I planned to come alone, but the airport doesn’t allow kids to travel alone, so I brought Mr. Valtor!” As if remembering something, Liam added, “Daddy, Mr. Valtor’s waiting downstairs at the café across from the office. Can he come up?”

Nathan, not one to argue, nodded. “Bring him up. And cancel all my meetings for today.”

Ethan acknowledged his instructions and quickly left the room.

Meanwhile, Olivia was on her way back to the country, feeling restless as she pondered what had driven Liam to visit Nathan. She arrived the next morning and immediately called him once her plane landed. By then, Liam was already awake. Mr. Valtor was helping him get ready, just as he had every other morning.

Nathan stood nearby, watching the exchange. “Mr. Valtor, have you been the one taking care of Liam all these years?” His tone feigned indifference, but there was an underlying curiosity. He wanted to know more about the child—and about the woman.

Mr. Valtor, ever tactful, knew exactly how to handle Nathan’s questions. “Ms. Olivia’s very busy with work, but she always makes time to be with William every day.”

Nathan nodded thoughtfully, his mind racing. He was about to ask more when the sound of a ringing phone cut him off.

It was Liam’s phone. As soon as he saw it, Liam froze. Mr. Valtor exchanged a glance with Nathan, and it was clear they both knew who was calling. Nathan’s jaw tightened. “Answer it,” he ordered coldly, his eyes dark.

Liam hesitated but handed the phone to Mr. Valtor. With a resigned sigh, Mr. Valtor answered.

“William Monroe!” Olivia’s voice rang out from the other end, loud and frantic. “You have three seconds to tell me where you are right now!” Nathan could hear her voice clearly from across the room.

Mr. Valtor spoke carefully, “Ms. Olivia, it’s me.”

Olivia was furious. “Where is William Monroe?! Why didn’t he answer the phone? Mr. Valtor, how could you let him go off on his own? He left without a word! Don’t you know how worried I’ve been? Where are you now? Come to the hotel immediately!”

Mr. Valtor glanced at Liam, who shook his head vigorously. It was clear the boy didn’t want to go. Mr. Valtor, with a pained expression, replied, “Ms. Olivia, William… found his dad. We’re at Carter Manor right now.”

Olivia was momentarily stunned into silence. She had suspected something like this, but hearing the truth left her speechless. Liam had come to look for Nathan.

The thought had crossed Olivia’s mind months ago, but she hadn’t expected her son to take matters into his own hands like this. Now, Nathan knew of Liam’s existence. The very thought left her breathless.

The lingering humiliation of being expelled from Carter Manor still haunted her. Time had passed, but Olivia didn’t want to be entangled with the Carter family any longer.

Taking a deep breath, Olivia tried to suppress her emotions. “Mr. Valtor, bring Liam back immediately. I won’t repeat myself.”

Mr. Valtor could hear the steel in her voice, the firmness of her resolve. He hesitated, then before he could speak, Nathan’s cold voice interrupted.

“Tell her that if she wants to take Liam home, she must come and speak with me in person.” His voice was soft but clear, and Olivia heard every word.
